Most people know the overture but not so much the rest of the opera. It turns out that this opera is full of fun and great tunes, and this performance fizzes and buzzes along.

Its sung in English, so its easy to follow too.

I'm a big fan of the Chandos Opera in English recordings; some works seem, however, better suited to be sung in English (which has a tendency to make everything sound a bit like G&S) and one of these is "The Bartered Bride".
It helps, of course, when the singers involved boast excellent diction and there is a witty and singable translation, as is the case here; the translator, Kit Hesketh-Harvey, also puts in an amusing cameo as the Red Indian.

Sir Charles Mackerras was one of our greatest conductors, matchless in Mozart and Slavonic music and he shows a tremendous affinity for Smetana's music, with its inebriating rhythms and melodic grace. The Philharmonic Orchestra is on top form, as is the Royal Opera Chorus; indeed, the majority of the singers here are recreating the roles they performed on stage at Covent Garden.

There are some splendid performances here and even the smallest parts are filled by singers of the calibre of Diana Montague, Neal Davies and Robin Leggate. Timothy Robinson does well as the stuttering Vaŝek and while I would prefer a fruitier bass than the one wielded here by Peter Rose as Kecal, he has all the notes and sings with a real sense of style and excellent diction. Susan Gritton sings beautifully and acts convincingly as Maĝenka. She is partnered by Paul Charles Clarke as Jenĭk; he is a good singer, but I would have preferred a more ingratiating tone.

The whole opera goes with a tremendous swing and will, I am sure, delight all who purchase this recording.

HASH(0x92bec318) out of 5 stars Great Opera! 1 Jan. 2012
By A. Roth - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I have a great many of the Chandos Opera in English titles, and among them, this one is near the best. I find that these Opera in English vary in quality as to the degree of intelligibility of the words and, if you are buying an opera in english it is because you want to understand.

Well, this one is near the top of the pile. The story itself is sweet and the english is very easy to follow, the singers have clear diction and they sing quite nicely. I do not have this opera in Czech, but I can readily imagine listening to this one often. If you are looking to explore the Opera in English series, this is a good way to start. After that, try the Mozart operas, they are quite good too!

HASH(0x92bdafb4) out of 5 stars Beware! Words don't match Schirmer score. 5 Jun. 2016

Words are totally different than in the Schirmer score. Also the scenes and acts are numbered differently. If you want to be confused and you are trying to learn this opera, get the album. Otherwise, pound it out on your own keyboard.
