My son (3) and I really enjoy all the books written by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, but this one is our favourite (well actually joint favourite with the Gruffalo and Room on the Broom).
As usual there is a fantastic rhythm to the story - it is a positive joy to read the book aload.
The illustrations are particularly good (and adult readers will enjoy the jokes included in the background).

My two year old son adores this. It's an absolute favourite, along with Bear Hunt, A Squash and a Squeeze and the 'Snore' book! It's a wonderfully rhythmical story and if you don't mind doing silly voices and making up tunes it's perfect for reading at bedtime. As with all the above mentioned books, I often catch him reciting passages to himself..., "My tie is a scarf for a cold giraffe" etc. We have a wonderful children's bookshop near us and they recommended this book. At first I thought he might be too young, but they were absolutely right

I was worried that my two year old would not understand this book as some of the words were beyond his understanding. I worried for no reason. My son absolutely loves this book and requests it every night without fail! The storyline is simple, nice and encourages sharing and friendliness (all the things that you want your children to learn). The illustrations are excellent and have so much going on in the background as well.
This book is a must have for all parents that enjoy reading bedtime stories as much as their children enjoy listening to them.

If not quite as classic as The Gruffalo, this tales is more moving. The writer plays on the word "smart" - the giant isn't smart in the US sense, but wants to be well-dressed. He buys himself a makeover, only to give it away piece by piece, to needy animals. In the end he returns to his ragged clothes, poorer, but rich in friendship. Like Room on the Broom, this is a rare story about not being selfish, told in bouncy rhyming couplets that even New Labour spin-doctors could grasp.

As mentioned by several reviewers, the story is consistent and very correct, full of education and good behaviour towards others around you - a great addition to any 2-5-year-old-child's development. However in addition, it also happens in stages, each new one full of charming characters, with compelling beautiful scenes. There is so much detail in each scene that every time you re-read, there is a new side-story to tell, which keeps an observing child as my daughter very curious to know what happens next. My daughter enjoys the inventing of the parallel characters, nothing to do with the core-story, like the daddy-cat fishing, then the kitty-cat, with mummy-cat by the tent, grilling a fish on the fire. I wish all books I bought my daughter, brought her as much enjoyment as this one.

I read to my son all the time and this is one of my favorite books and his too. The Gruffalo was sweet but this story has much more to offer, the kind giant feels bad becuase he is not as smart as the others, but he would literally give the shirt off his back to help others - and that's much more important. Reminds us of another kind and humble man in a robe and sandels! Told beautifully with a gentle rhyme! A must for every pre-schooler.

This is a lovely book that my daughter loves. Its a little unusual in story and has great pictures-well worth buying. We have now had this book for a couple of years and it still gets read on a regular basis.

This is a tale of off-beat generosity, which is well enough. The charm of this book, to me, is the clever fashion in which the Giant's new clothes serve to help the various animals he encounters on his way. The illustrations are workmanlike, but didn't strike me as very special. There is little by way of interest tucked into the drawings. There is no particular word play - the story is just set out in a repeating sing-song style.

That said, stories about generosity and sharing that have picture book appeal and that don't hector are uncommon enough that this book is worth a look.
