This scale can weigh up to 1000g/1kg in increments of 0.1g and is best to be placed on a sturdy surface free from vibration so there are no fluctuations on the display. Granite is best with the person weighing whilst sitting down. Do not breathe towards the scale nor touch the pan or object to be weighed with your fingers, use tweezers and ensure there are no air currents or vibrations for accurate results to the 0.1g
I happen to have a set of laboratory standard check-weights and used these for my review against a laboratory Sartorious balance that weighs to 0.0001g. For each weighing operation I placed a large glass beaker over the scale to top any air currents from giving false readings.Read more ›
First off, I have to mention that the first scales that I received did not work. This was the second time this has happened as I also reviewed the 100g version of these scales. This didn't bode well for the product or the company. When I switched it on the scales read -129.01g and pressing TARE did not reset the scales to zero as it should have. Having read the instructions carefully, I found that you can calibrate the scales (although it was not 'Auto Calibration' as indicated in the instruction manual) which I tried. To do this I had to switch it on, then press and hold the MODE button. Then 'CAL' appeared on screen briefly followed by a request to put exactly 500g on the scales which I did. The scales were then supposed to flash 'PASS' to confirm calibration however nothing happened at all. The scales still refused to work. After contacting the manufacturer however they were very accommodating and supplied a replacement scale which worked perfectly.
These scales are quite light at and is approximately the size of a rubber stamp pad. It's nice that the scales have a cover to protect the pan and buttons when travelling and is useful for jewellers. They run off 2 AAA batteries which are supplied with the scales and are protected from wearing out prematurely by a plastic tab inserted inbetween the connections. The scales have 4 modes; g (grams), oz (ounces), gn (grains) and ct (carat weight) which increment in 0.01g, 0.001oz, 0.2gn and 0.05ct respectively.Read more ›
It has the tendency to creep up whilst sitting still by several grams, so you just hit the tare function and be quick.
Over the last year its been getting worse, climbing 30g in 20 seconds making it unusable.
These scales have an impressive range 1000.0g to 0.1g. Without using the calibration function I used the scales right out of the box, placing a old pound coin on the stainless steel plate it read 9.4g. Tried other check weights, even a slither of paper which read 0.2g before trying the pound coin again and it went straight to 9.4g.
Apparently the reason to calibrate scales before you use them is simply to do with your location on the earth. Each location has its own variance of gravity to the next which can influence scales. If you slip these into your suitcase or pocket and travel, best you get yourself a known weight (500g) made from carbon steel, to recalibrate them before use.
The size of these scale is around that of a iPhone, if a wee bit thicker. The sturdy clam shell plastic case means that you do not need to support the stainless steel platform whilst the scale is being moved. It will also protect it in your pocket or suitcase from having anything pressed against it. The unit would not feel out of place in the inside pocket of a jacket.
The Led panel is backlit and very clear, the type of weight being reported/measured is shown as g, oz, ozt and dwt. The unit is powered by 2 AAA batteries (supplied) which fit in a covered recessed alcove in the back. The buttons are precise and give a reassuring click to indicate they have been pressed. There is an on/off button but the unit will auto-shutdown after 60 seconds of no use.
Now I have a truly mobile scale that can measure between 1000 and 0.1g for less that a tenner.
