The trike has many good features for a growing child but at the age of 18 months, we have discovered a safety concern. When a child is too young to appreciate the importance of keeping his feet completely on the rest pedals, it is too easy for his foot to slide down off the pedal and become trapped between the wheel and pedal when the trike is being steered.

This has happened to our grandson and he sustained painful grazing on the back of his foot due to this incident.

I bought this trike for my 10 month old granddaughter for Christmas.
She absolutely loves it, it was her favourite toy at Christmas and still is. When she is not riding on it she is lovingly examining it!
I was impressed by the quality and strength of it, and thought that it was good value for money.

I bought it for my 11 month old daughter and she dismissed the stroller immediately. We only go out on the trike now, and she adores it. She points at it every time we pass by at home. It's a bit tough to assemble, some of the parts don't ideally fit, but my husband managed it with a bit of effort. It's very sturdy and easy to maneuvre, and light too, I find it much easier on the tube than a stroller. The canopy is quite useless as you can't see the baby with it on, so we never put it on - worth buying a £10 cheaper model without one. My baby doesn't pedal yet, so I can see quite a life for this trike when she will learn it. It's also very bright and eye-catching, so you get all the smiles when you take your baby out on it.

Most reviews are probably posted just after taking receipt or soon after assembling and using a few times, so to agree with some of the points, the Trike is easily enough put together, and seems fairly sturdy.

Now the bad news, durability issues do not appear till some time later and we found after only using around a dozen times (7-8 outside), and the Trike stored inside, we have had issues. The rubber inserts which sit in grooves on the plastic wheels seem as though they have stretched and slip off the plastic wheels, making the Trike unusable.

On trying to address this issue so we could use the Trike, we found out that Smart Trike's UK agent Mookie Toys only provide a 6 month warranty, possibly a telling story in itself, and were pretty unhelpful, only really looking to sell us replacement wheels @ £25 - of course no telling if they would be any better.

With similar reviews on numerous sites also highlighting this issue, we bought a second hand Little Tikes Trike, all in all much stronger and more likely to last the time (one of the original appeals) but without what appears to be a design weakness.

We tried to repair the wheel but without much luck, and have left us with a dilemma in what to do with the 1st birthday present from Grandma.

Wish I had read more reviews on the cons...

We bought this product from Amazon as it was cheaper by £16 than other retailers we researched. The Trike is easy to assemble (even if brute force is sometimes needed) and our 1yr old daughter absolutely loves it. My only problem with it is that the clutch does not work. It is supposed to stop the pedels going round when engaged but simply does not do this. This is the second trike we have had this issue with, so looks like a fault with the design. Otherwise, love it.

This trike was a birthday present for my 1 year old son and he loves it! It is nicely made and can be assembled easily although a few parts need a bit of a squeeze. The unit is sturdy and he is very comfortable in it. The colours are great - very visible on the road!

From the adult perspective it is great as you feel that the child is secure and well supported. The pedal disengagement is good as is the sun shade and being able to push and steer 'remotely' is perfect even being very tall.

My only concern is how long it will last. We live on fairly rough lanes and I am not sure it will sustain the bumps/wear and tear. That said, it is holding together very well so far and hopefully it will be fine for a good while to come.

We looked long and hard into which trike to buy. We came to the conclusion that the more you read reviews the more confused you get as one man's milk is another man's poison. Regarding this trike, we've recently taken delivery of it. There were several comments about how difficult it was to put together and this was a big concern of ours as I personally get frustrated quite quickly with things like this. I can't say I understand how anyone could find it tricky to put together at all?! No more difficult than opening a packet of crisps!

Re comments about it being cheap and flimsy, at the end of the day it's a plastic kid's trike and feels like one, but unless it's treated really badly I can't see it falling apart before she outgrows it.

Re safety concerns, this was also the big issue for us. Personally I don't think the pedals / footrest issue will be an issue and I'm really sorry if anyone's kiddie finds otherwise. My only concern is that when the steering is fully to one way or another I wonder if the trike could topple if the child also threw all their weight in the same direction. Probably not, but you worry as a parent don't you?!

All in all we're happy so far with the trike and the cost. Will certainly post again should anything change that
