A key reason for installing the Netatmo is to improve control of the home heating system and hopefully save some cash in going so. The old mechanical thermostat and set schedule of on off heating times is fine but it does not predict the most efficient times to turn the heating off and on it reacts but does not learn. The Netatmo learns the insulation properties of your home, uses outside temperature to predict an efficient on off time. So you should make sure that the heating prediction is enabled in the app - it takes a few weeks to learn, meanwhile if the thermostat is installed outside of a winter period home temperatures may be acceptable for most of the day and night but need occasional boiler bursts to top up in colder periods. To do this I set the default time of manual set points to 30 minutes rather than the default 3 hours. Then if it gets a tad chilly I use the app to increase the required temperature for a boost in heat. I then have the scheduled temperature set below that required heat so that the Netatmo does not call for inessential heating. The heating graphs are very useful - the black curve shows the internal home temperature, the orange line the preset temperature and the orange vertical bars indicate the boiler burn periods. In winter I increase the preset temperature, in this case the black curve will be below the orange line when there is a need for heating.
My relay is plugged in a wall socket close to an Apple Express WiFi and connects at 72Mbs, the relay is about 20 feet from the Netatmo and has a robust WiFi connection that is rock solid. The setup on an iPad or iPhone was very easy, WiFi passwords and stettings are automatically read by the app - at one stage a code is displayed by the Netatmo this is scanned by the iPhone to make a secure connection - it is a twelve digit code, hack proof I would say. Once connected heating can be controlled via Apple Home and Siri voice controls remotely.
Update: My boiler developed a fault and Netatmo sent me an email as the heating temperature had not increased - thanks Netatmo I was able to reset my boiler and the wifey didn’t have a cold shower.
Once set up, after approx. 7 days it offered me a new setting (to more accurately control the heating) - what a difference. Before that setting, it acted as a pretty basic thermostat (and I wondered if it was worth the money just to be able to switch my heating on and off remotely - the swings were high - up to 3°C - as it made no adjustment for the fact my radiators retained heat after heating or that it took a certain time to get the room up to temperature). Now, the swings are low (less than 0.1°C) and the boiler is on for shorter periods (more often, but overall less time). This is what I paid for. Smiley face!
Setting up is pretty easy - I wired it in a way not shown in the book (hard wired the relay into the timer - basically the relay connects the black and grey wires when the thermostat is on, so I connected the grey to live and the black to switch the boiler - if you don't know how these things work I wouldn't try this though).
Installation was easy, I just took my old thermostat off the wall and attached the new one, connected the radio/WiFi adapter to the mains and it was pretty much off to the races.
You then connect the TRVs, and create rooms (I have a big open plan living room with 4 TRVs and the thermostat, so that was one room, and 4 bedrooms, and 2 Hallways,
My understanding was that when one of the rooms was turned on it would request heat from the boulder without the main Thermostat room needing to be turned on, this was not how it was working, I was confused and frustrated because I thought I had spent £700 on something that didn't do what I wanted, but that was when I did a little investigating and discovered that you need to wait up to 48 hours for the TRVs to update to the latest firmware.... once that is done, they work exactly as expected.
