I spent 25 years working as a venture capitalist and thus have seen thousands of business plans, many containing the same mistaken assumptions about markets, segmentation, sales and marketing strategy and so on. I have also been involved with many young businesses and seen things go both right and wrong (my own book on the subject, Angels,Dragons and VulturesAngels, Dragons and Vultures: How to Tame Your Investors... And Not Lose Your Company: Capital Advice for Entrepreneurs, covers all the issues around handling different types of investor in your business).

Sabrina Kiefer and Bart Clarysse's book covers the journey the entrepreneur needs to make from idea to success in a comprehensive, practical and readable way. They point up many of the pitfalls I have seen in plans and businesses around identifying suitable markets, making good assumptions about market share, protecting your IP, carving out your place in the value chain and, indeed, raising money. The book is illustrated and brought to life by many interesting and relevant case studies.

In 240 pages it is obviously not possible to cover every aspect of the topic in great depth, and entrepreneurs may want to move on to read around some aspects in more detail (like raising capital, for example). But this is a really good place to start and I would recommend it to all aspiring entrepreneurs.

The book is an excellent step-by-step guide to building a business *case*. I've found it useful as I am working on a new venture and it has provided concrete tools to filling in the holes in my own analysis and thinking. My copy is full of dog ears for ideas that I want to follow up on, and resources that I am checking out. The case studies were current, relevant and helpful (remember boo.com?). It's a great resource for a first-time or even experienced entrepreneur and well worth reading as it is likely to help your chances of success in very concrete ways (ways to carry out market research, always difficult to figure out, as a case in point). The rare business book that's a useful tool!

This is a smart, well-written and well structured book. I've been an entrepreneur and an investor, and this book is a useful read whichever your side of the negotiating table. You can tell that it's written from experience and, unlike most academic books, has recommendations and lessons based on reality rather than theory. I have two copies - one that I lend to budding entrepreneurs and one that I keep myself.

Each chapter is useful, like a tool, presenting a different way to to think about the start-up. The book helped me think through several start-up ideas and pick the one that's best for me. I know I'll be using it to further develop the idea and make it work. The book is clearly written for a real person to use -- the examples are concise -- and all the frameworks and tools are meaningful, not academic. My copy is already dog-eared and ragged from referring back to it so many times.

This book has really helped me through the early stages of my own startup. The real life case studies grounded the theory effectively and provided some much needed inspiration during some low points along the way!
