Product Description

Product Description

Malcolm Ingram s Small Town Gay Bar focuses on the wider communities that surround two small gay bars in the deep south of America- Rumours in Shannon, Mississippi and Different Season/Crossroads in Meridian, Mississippi. The areas struggle with ignorance, hypocrisy and oppression, as the general populous is brought face to face with a vibrant and aware homosexual community. DVD-R: This title is manufactured-on-demand when ordered from The Canny Store using the highest quality DVD-R discs.

This is am amazing peace of filming showing what gay life is like in small narrow minded towns, a great insight into these brave 'honest to themselves' people, wish it was available on Region 2, a must see.

A very interesting insight into what it is like to be gay and lesbian in the rural South of the United States today: how difficult it is to come out to the people around you, to find a place to hang out, and to assert yourself in a society that still harbors a lot of anti-gay resentments (often based on religious fundamentalism). As discouraging the situation may be at times; the people portrayed in this film are inspiring and uplifting.

Format: DVD
This documentary shot in the early to mid Noughties shows the importance for the local LGBT people in rural Mississippi of having a safe and fun place where everybody feels welcome and accepted. It shows the struggles the community has faced from certain religious preachers as well as from local homophobes, but it also shows the great network that has been formed around these bars and how people that otherwise feel like outcasts find a home and a voice in the community.
It is not quite as ground-breaking or even extreme as other documentaries dealing with similar subjects, but you get a good feel for the bars and the people and you definitely get an idea about how difficult it can be to be gay and proud in an area that is not exactly known for its open-mindedness. 3.5 stars & worth a view!

5.0 out of 5 stars Small Town but a Great Community 15 Sept. 2012

A great depiction of small town life & one of the few shining examples I have ever seen of the LGBT community pulling and working TOGETHER !

I would hope the filmmaker would think about doing a follow up for all the people depicted and what is going on there today..

For anyone in a small town, you probably live this life... But for those of us who are actually in a larger city and have access to several bars and LGBT friendly places, this should be a "must watch" video. We as a community have grown complacent and those who complain you only have the same old tired bars to go to, this film let's you know how lucky you are to have more than one! So glad I bought this film...

Done in a True documentary style , it seems obvious the film maker didnt have a huge budget to work with. But that is not the issue. It is the story that counts, so don't be expecting a Hollywood blockbuster. Get your big city friends to come over one night and have a LGBT movie night with this film. Then put on Sordid Lives!

4.0 out of 5 stars An important part of the discussion 30 Oct. 2007

I grew up in Chicago, but early in my journalism career I spent some time in the wilds of the Bible Belt, and so this film had resonance for me. It is about extraordinarily brave people who come together to be who they are even in an environment in which that can be a dangerous thing to do. It is also about the families and friends of these extraordinarily brave people, who sometimes have to have a real struggle with themselves before they remember that families love their own and that Christianity is not about hate. My blood pressure got some excellent exercise when the filmmakers showed a considerable amount of Fred Phelps, who is surely one of the most evil men in the world today. I had to restrain myself from throwing things at the television screen. The film is not as slickly produced as some, but it is an important contribution to visual and oral history for the GLBT community in America. I commend the filmmakers and recommend the film to others.

This is a great documentary that I originally saw at the Washington DC gay film festival (Reel Affirmations). The film is filled with touching stories and unforgettable characters, and is a reminder that our gay brothers and sisters in the rural South often have to endure hardships to be who they are.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful documentary 30 Sept. 2011

In depth, intriquing look at a minority population lives within a very conservative area. It is a great documentary that looks into a small town and how the gay culture is attempting to thrive in a Bible-beating town. It is a small-budget film but the interviews and looks into the area are interesting and well-done.
