Hans-Peter Lindstrom's mini-album 'Smalhans' punches well above its weight.
This Norwegian electronic music producer certainly knows how to work his
beats but there is much more to these six tracks than mere filler for the
dance floor. Mr Lindstrom's ability to syncopate rhythm and melody makes
for the kind of listen which sustains attention and interest as well as
keeping our toes tapping. He's particularly fond of staccato structural
patterns and the kind of walking bass lines which J.S. Bach might well
have tipped his wig to but he's not afraid to funk up the action too when
the mood suits him. It's delightfully infectious and intelligent stuff.

Truth-be-told I seem to have fallen for it all hook, line and sinker but if
I had to pull out a couple of numbers for closer inspection I'd probably plumb
for 'Eg-Ged-Osis', a quasi-fugal composition which builds, in an arch-like
progression, to a dauntingly complex central climax before settling down again
into its addictive introductory groove and final track 'Faar-I-Kaal' which, with
its chattering synths and loping bass, is very nearly impossible to sit still to.

A small but nonetheless perfectly-formed technological confection.

Recommended.

After the challenge that was 'Six Cups Of Rebel' it is tempting to describe this as a return to form. It certainly is more familiar territory but it feels tighter and more focused than the often languid excursions with Prins Thomas, and is punchier than the excellent 'Where I Go You Go Too'.

The usual cliches do apply; Georgio Moroder-style basslines, space-disco melodies, but it is all done with such charm and style that it seems churlish to pick fault for any unoriginality.

It is a very enjoyable half-hour or so, and its briefness is almost one of its assets, as one does not tire of it and often will look forward to hearing it again.

"Return to form" - bollocks. Six Cups of Rebel was a fantastic album, & the narrow-minded naysayers who accused Lindstrøm of losing the plot thereupon need to drastically expand their musical horizons, I reckon?

Smalhans seems like a slightly reticent step backwards in comparison, albeit a rather pleasant one.
