Great for giving you a rough idea

Great product to give you an idea of how much some of your electrical appliances are using - unfortunately it can't be used on the really big hitters like your electric cooker/oven/immersion or things like your central heating pump - you have to 'guessstimate' those.

One tip is to microwave everything you can - our small microwave uses 1280 watt which is likey less than half of the oven/ hobb and will be on for half the time.

I prepared a Google docs sheet that may or may not be useful in estimating costs - pretty self explanatory - just put in your unit cost (it's on your bill), VAT (currently 5%) and then go round and test each appliance.

If you are testing over a period of time just take the Kw/h reading divide by the number of hours and multiply by 1000 to give the wattage then input into the chart along with an estimate of the amount of time the item is used.

Obviously cannot guarantee the accuracy of the chart but it should give you a rough idea of which items are running up your bill.

Oh and do unplug things or switch them off at the socket - I have a couple of items which still draw electricity when plugged in even though they are switched off!

If you are like me and leave the immersion on (cost roughly 40-50p per hour) get one of these - Timeguard TGBT4 Electronic Boost Timer, 3 kW - White

This energy monitor is good quality, inexpensive, it does what is says and it's pretty accurate. It gives you voltage, frequency, current (A), power (W) and cumulative energy used (kWh). It is often slated by those who think it should retain its reading after unplugging. Well it doesn't and I wouldn't expect it to as it doesn't have a battery. You need to look at it and note the reading before you unplug it. The one downside to it not retaining it's reading is that if you're trying to get a long term view of energy used by an appliance over a few weeks (e.g. washing machine) and there's a power cut at some stage during that period, it resets itself to zero. If that's what you're trying to do it might be better to get a more expensive one.

These things are so cheap and relatively simple to install, there is no reason not to get them. Lots of different brands out there, these are good value and fit perfectly with no bubbles under the protector. Just make sure you wipe, dry then dab before you drop the protector into place.
This Slegrey one doesn't go all the way to the edge of the screen but if you have a case that should protect there (I always struggle with curved screens and full covers)
The only thing I would say negatively about these are that they don't repel fingerprints but you have to pay for that tech. Might try the Tozo one next though if the fingerprints start to annoy me.

This one is rare in that its actually accurate. Well worth paying a little extra over other products which may be a little cheaper. I have checked the accuracy against a calibrated £2,000 laboratory digital watt meter and it compares well. This is especially important if you want to measure the power of low consumption things like low energy lighting, power supplies etc. Over the last few years we have also used this same model in a laboratory environment and they have lasted well under constant use.
