I like modern fairy tales and this one is amazing. It leaves you wanting more. It's interesting and shocking at the sometime.

Not a book, a short story. If you'd been aware of that at the onset, you might read it differently, but I was sorely disappointed as none of the characters are fleshed out, everything happens 1,2,3 ... stuff happens and you think "WHAT?!"... then it ends and you realise why! It's a cautionary tale - in short story form.

2.0 out of 5 stars New, but not improved 17 July 2013
By Tah_Dah - Published on Amazon.com

I've really enjoyed reading many updated fairy tales that are currently so popular. This one, rather than being fun and fresh, was just sad and a bit disturbing. "Beauty" is essentially a prop, both her parents are very dark characters, and the "Prince Charming" is a nice but naive boy who is used and then thrust aside. The ending was very abrupt and unsatisfying.

If anything, this would be a decent lead-in to the REAL story: what happens when Beauty awakens? THAT I might be willing to read, but won't read any other short works from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good and well told story! 23 Aug. 2012

This was an unusual variation on an old tale. The characters were well described and sympathetic, each in their own way. I particularly liked the way the voice changed for each of the characters. When you are inside the head of a 16-year-old boy it was very different from when the voice of an adult took over; and the author did this seamlessly and made each one believable. The ending should surprise you, too; so much for fairy tale endings! I found this a fast-paced and truly enjoyable short. Give it a try! I'm sure you'll like it.
4.0 out of 5 stars A tale of greed and hope 14 May 2013
By Sheila Deeth - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Greed wears more than one disguise in John Phython's intriguing short story, Sleeping Beauty--the greed of a father denying his daughter freedom to protect her honor, the greed of a mother molding a child in her image, greed of finance, greed of gossip, and more. But one sixteen-year-old gives his time honestly, sees the truth behind other people's lies, and stays true to his emotions. Perhaps he's Beth's only hope--certainly he's a rare hope for others being bullied at school. But do sixteen-year-olds even know their emotions, or are they just greedy for what they can get?

The story's told convincingly from different points of view, with only the heroine's voice silent. By the end, I'm longing to hear her speak. I want her to remember, to know, perhaps even to save the one who saved her. Then I remember, we've seen who she is. Do we really need to be told?

Well-timed, well-told, neither longer nor shorter than it need be, Sleeping Beauty is indeed a modern fairy-tale, with all the gruesome cruelties of the old set in the world of the new.

Disclosure: I was lucky enough to buy this when it was free.
4.0 out of 5 stars A traditional fairy tale for modern times 5 Oct. 2012
By Roxanne Crouse - Published on Amazon.com

I enjoyed this story. It is well formatted for kindle and is free of copy-editing problems common in self-published works. The writing style flows easily ninety-five percent of the time with only a few clumsy sentences. When the point of view changes, so does the voice of the characters, a skill most authors need to improve on including myself. The story is free of unnecessary back story dumps and stays in scene throughout the piece never falling into chunks of boring telling.

The description I found on amazon says exactly what this story is about, a terrible tale of what happens when parents become too protective to the point of cruelty. The story will leave you hurting for the young couple it involves. My only beef was at the end I wanted to know more, which is a good thing. What happens to this poor cursed couple.

I definitely recommend this story which follows the formula of a true fairy tale before Disney got a hold of them. You'll enjoy this modern version of sleeping beauty.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Modern Fairy Tale 30 Jan. 2016

I liked this modern remix of Sleeping Beauty, but felt the end fell a little short. This classic tale was certainly brought in to modern times. The story is "classic" with seriously dark undertones. An intriguing tale.
