Amidst the thaw of glasnost, the Kremlin discovers that two Soviet agents, sent to England under deep cover in 1965, have been "lost." A beautiful and ambitious Russian agent, sent to London to track them down, becomes embroiled in a tangle of CIA, KGB and MI-5 plots and counter-plots as the two lost agents, now utterly assimilated, try to avoid detection.

Do svidaniya, comrade.
Brilliant drama, tinged with comedy, 'Sleepers' is handled with real gentleness and you can't help getting caught up in the lives of these two hapless agents, as they try and evade their Soviet masters. This 4-part series is as nostalgic to me as a TV viewer, as the Soviet memorabilia must be to certain Russians. It has all the hallmarks of a serious spy drama, and the acting is perfect throughout. An interesting fact: Nigel Havers' Russian had to be dubbed in by someone else because he couldn't get his tongue round it!
I loved the music too, with the almost eerie opening sequence played on balalaikas, evoking music traditionally used with Cold War spy films, and the quirky Russian folk ditty at the end, also played on the balalaika. Speaking of music, I am sure I remember 'The Long And Winding Road' by the Beatles as being the backing track for the last scene, but in the DVD, this has been replaced. It doesn't detract from the quality of the story or the DVD package, it's just that if you are expecting it and it isn't there you notice it!
Finally, this set is advertised as Region 1 encoded, but it isn't. It works just fine on my region 2 player. So if you want it, get it!
I went straight to buy it as soon as I saw it.
Two Russian agents left as Sleepers in the 1960s get so well integrated into the UK that they all but forget about their Russian pasts. Until the KGB start searching them down....
One of the them has made a load on money in the City. Up north, the other is a Trade Unionist. So when they get together to try and evade the Russians. They have the deal with their own culture shock dealing with another social class.
Very funny throughout.
