Another fantastic piece of music from Tom in his most ambient guise. If you like this I thoroughly recommend his and Mark Pritchards' LP 76:14 as Global Communication. (You can hear fleetingly some of those sounds in this)
Having followed Toms' work since the early 90's I was excited to hear about this album from Tom using his expertise and his knowledge of the science of sleep together to compose a musical product that promotes relaxation and even sleep itself.
I've primarily been playing the Sleep Better part and while I've listened to the other two sections a bit and are equally rewarding, this review concentrates on the Sleep Better section of the album.
From the day I got this, from my point of view, the music was too interesting to fall asleep to on the first handful of times and I struggled to 'switch off' from the swirling, washing soundscapes that captured my imagination to be out amongst the stars, exploring the universe. Setting this music to visuals where you're navigating in deep space would be a truly immersive (and awesome) experience. (Tom, please ask someone to do this for you!)
Saying that though, do not be put off by this, set at the right volume, this album soon helped me drift off and now having become familiar with the sounds, I don't analyse and inspect it as much as I normally do with music, and have learned to let it consume me, but just without the focus on how the sounds interact with each other. While I don't struggle to get to sleep, I do often wake up not feeling refreshed and I feel that listening to this does, indeed improve sleep quality, I'm guessing that the rhythms Tom uses help the brain to reach the required brainwave frequency for deep NREM sleep and I would expect even for a full sleep cycle since the section is nearly 90 minutes long.
Now, there is a track that I do have a problem with and setting the volume lower has helped me with this bit. The track, 'Moon' has dragged me out of sleep and basically woken me up, many times. It has a very slow, swinging rhythm, with lush pads washing in and out and maybe the tones used here are too stimulating for my ears, but I just find myself being woken up by it. It's the best track on the CD! Too emotionally charged? I don't know, it's bloody frustrating, I can't ignore it. So to mitigate it I have to turn the volume down to a level where it won't be too distracting, but the rest of the tracks are then a little bit too quiet.
All of this is subjective to me and others may experience this music in a different way, but if you're struggling with sleep or relaxation at the end of the day, I thoroughly recommend turning off your screens, getting comfortable and letting this stunning soundscape take you on a journey, the power of this music is truly inspiring and deeply settling.
