Season 1 and 2 complete + pilotfilm "Double Cop" on 4 dvds , english and german audio , german import : Unleashed on an unsuspecting television audience in the fall of 1986, Sledge Hammer centers on a renegade police detective (David Rasche) whose credo is shoot first and ask questions six months later. Armed with his trusty .44 magnum, the eponymous hero doles out his unique brand of justice to any piece of criminal scum who is unlucky enough to cross his path. The recipient of critical praise and much controversy, this comic spoof of DIRTY HARRY has enjoyed a growing cult status since it left the air in 1988.

As for the show itself, some may be horrified by the main character, "Sledge" having a dim view of women. He is something of a misogynist, but the comedy mainly comes from the point that he seems to be a relic from a bygone age, struggling to adjust to the modern world. It comes across as the show ridiculing his misogyny, rather than condoning it. Reaching for his gun as often as he does is probably more of a concern but, then again, that is also a part of the comedy. A running joke is his use of the catchphrase "Trust me, I know what I'm doing", when clearly he doesn't.
If you haven't heard of the show, and are wondering why only two series were filmed, the show was a victim of poor scheduling both here in the UK and in the US too. The picture quality of the second series is noticeably less sharp, because the network made the decision to use cheaper film stock. If you like Police Squad, or spoofs in general, this is probably good for a few laughs. David Rasche is perfect in the lead role.
This is a review of the item/product. i.e. not the series. The DVD case is a little wider than normal and contains 8 DVDs on one spindle! As soon as you open the case one or two discs come loose. All the discs have an appearance of being copied. So I don't know if this is a legitimate item produced very cheaply abroad, or a fake item. Disc 1 wouldn't play on my multi-region Panasonic DVD/BD player/recorder. It just made a loud noise, the second attempt didn't even recognise the disc in the drive, and the third attempt was back to making a loud whirring noise. I tried it in my PS3 and it eventually played, fortunately (which is why I haven't returned or exchanged the item),
The discs look like standard DVD computer discs and the images/labelling isn't of a high standard. The episode listing on each disc is very small, and I can't even read it on disc 2 due to it being blurred, small, and faint.
There are NO MENUS on any of the discs, so if you have to stop viewing, change a disc for something else, and come back to it, you'll be in trouble finding where you left off or indeed what episode you were watching! The only 'extras' on the discs are a few movie trailers from the '80s or '90s for films hardly anyone has watched. Having no menus means chapter skipping them each time you put a disc in as they automatically play from the beginning.
A couple of days ago I downloaded the complete series via a torrent. To support the industry I bought the series on DVD (this review) - unfortunately it let me down. To add to this comment, I now have extras (from elsewhere) with different versions of the Pilot episodes (yes, plural!) and PDFs with the pilot scripts. Not only that, there are TV spots and other bonus features. In short, this DVD collection is really poor.
Would I buy this product again... NO! Definitely not worth £20.
Discs were in perfect condition. But actual box quite brittle and fragile. Probably different quality plastic used by manufacturers.
Was relieved to see audio was English. Shame about the Dutch subtitles. Couldn't access menu from the DVD player I trialled it on but I'm sure the menu and subtitle issues can be resolved through the root directory of the player-I didn't get time to explore that.
Most annoying bits are the same trailers at the beginning of all discs in the first series only. That however could easily be skipped with the next chapter option.
Overall I'm happy with the purchase.
