I was looking forward to reading this book from Malcolm Stern. Unlike many of the bland self help books around, this has real wisdom from someone who has really thought deeply about what makes us tick. He is very honest about his own life, which is so refreshing and this book is about how his daughter's suicide has created positive ripples for both him and his clients and those who can attend his groups. It is such a heart-warming read and I found it hard to put down. Rather than try to impress the reader with theory, Malcolm gives guidance from examples and situations many will find familiar. There's so much deep learning to be gained from this book. I look forward to re-reading it, as there is so much to treasure in its pages.

I’ve read a lot of self-help books in my life and this is among the best. It is a road map for the joyful painful messy confusion that is life. It doesn’t sugar-coat it or over simplify it. We are presented with the full extravaganza of human experience and offered really wise and down-to-earth guidance on how to navigate it all. There are no quick fixes. Malcolm Stern knows that we are all a mixture of amazing and hopeless; and he shows us how to live with both of those truths. We all have work to do on ourselves and it’s best done with compassion, discipline and community. I absolutely loved this book and came away from it with renewed hope and enthusiasm for life despite the madness of the times we’re living through.

This book brings the wisdom of his groups to all. I have personally felt the benefits of Malcolm's approach to authenicity and tuning in to my wisdom in my relationships. I loved his unqiue chapter on approaching death. I wizzed through this book in a couple of days and will be re-reading soon I am sure.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in the workings of the human psyche. It intersperses stories from the author's own life, with those of the people he's worked with in the therapy groups he runs, plus offers plenty of the author's own wisdom, gathered from a richly-lived life of 7 decades, and one including a huge amount of inner work. It's beautifully written and very moving, particularly when it delves into areas such as the loss of his daughter, by suicide. One thing I really loved - & that is absent from a lot of 'self-help' (for want of a better word) books is the author's honesty about his own life and the places he didn't get it quite right, which makes it an incredibly humane book. Very rich, yet easy to read, and highly recommended.

Slay your Dragons with Compassion is overflowing with wisdom and kindness. Malcolm Stern explores the lessons he has learned in over 30 years as a therapist, both working with individual clients face-to-face and as a facilitator of groups. He writes movingly of his own pain when his daughter Melissa took her own life - and tells many stories of the huge and varied challenges that we face as human beings, revealing how many of his clients and group participants have dealt with and overcome them. Achieving the lives that all of us want is never easy and he demonstrates with many examples why it is essential to continually work on understanding ourselves better. In this warm and generous book you will find encouragement and support to make the effort to 'do the work' on yourself. Highly recommended as a thoughtful read for everyone who is interested in understanding more about the most satisfying and fulfilling way to experience your own life.
