Sláine: Warrior's Dawn Paperback – 15 Feb. 2008

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 125 ratings

Tir Nan Og - The Land of The Young - is a violent world, home to warring tribes who worship gods both benign and malevolent. One such tribe is the Sessair, brave warriors of enormous skill, and the best of them is a young barbarian named Slaine Mac Roth. In this first collection of Slaine's adventures, we meet the hero himself and his repellent dwarf companion, Ukko, and are introduced to the customs and wonders of his world - and the horrors, like the Sloughs: sinister magicians who worship death and destruction, and can raise armies of the dead to do their dark bidding...

About the Author

Pat Mills is the creator and first editor of 2000 AD. He developed Judge Dredd and is the writer-creator of many of 2000 AD’s most popular stories such as Sláine, Nemesis and A.B.C. Warriors.

Amongst his credits are Marshal Law (Marvel and DC Comics), co-created with Kevin O’Neill, the French graphic novel series Requiem, Vampire Knight with artist Olivier Ledroit, and Be Pure! Be Vigilant! Behave! The Secret History of 2000 AD and Judge Dredd. His current projects include Joe Pineapples: Tin Man, illustrated by Simon Bisley and Clint Langley, Spacewarp, and Kiss My Axe! The Secret History of Sláine the Warped Warrior.

Massimo Belardinelli’s career started with painting the backgrounds for animated cartoons for Rosi Studio in Rome. In 1977 he started working for 2000 AD where his distinctive style graced many strips including Dan Dare, Sláine, Meltdown Man and Ace Trucking Co. Belardinelli has been much praised for his delicate brushwork and intricate representations of the fantastic. Massimo Belardinelli died in March 2007.

His characters all spiky lines and outsized boots, Mick McMahon – some times known as Mike – co-created perennial 2000 AD favourites The V.C.s, and provided Tharg with many classic episodes of Judge Dredd, Ro-Busters, A.B.C. Warriors and Sláine. Outside of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, he drew an adventure with the original Cybermen for Doctor Who Magazine; Sonic the Hedgehog for Sonic the Comic; and, in America, issues of Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight plus the mini-series Tattered Banners and The Last American, the latter co-created with John Wagner and Alan Grant.

I always favoured Slaine over Conan, probably because Slaine was a thoroughly British hero but also because the stories are better written and the art of Belardinelli, McMahon, Fabry and Bisley is far superior to the artwork of artists working on the American Conan.

Warrior's Dawn is an absolute joy, the stories are compelling and of great interest they stirred in me moments of nostalgic bliss, and the illustrations by McMahon are genius.

The 1st Slaine is good but is hampered whilst it tries to find its way , but you have to start here to appreciate the amazing journey in the other books. Art work is from ok to good as is the story, but the characters are built here ready for the other books where this becomes a master piece of Barbarian Celtic story telling.

Five stars for reproducing the GLORIOUS scratchy line work of Mike McMahon. He really puts the other artists to shame. His Slaine is big and ugly - you can practically smell him. And the cover image - I could stare at it for days.

It's fantastic to get this story in collected form again. Unfortunately the publisher has not matched the format of the book to the original artwork so the pages have been shrunk, leaving white bars at the header and footer. My print is also very grey where there should be a marked contrast between black and white areas (for the pages drawn by Mike McMahon).

Still, this is the cheapest and most convenient way to revist this amazing story and artwork.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 80s comics - Interesting Character
Reviewed in the United States on 12 April 2014
This is one of the better comics from the 1980s that I did not read at the time. Slaine is an interesting and unique sword and sorcery comic character based upon Celtic myths. These are the first appearances of the character from the legendary weekly UK comic 2000 AD. The artwork is well done throughout the book, but Mike McMahon's artwork is especially good. It's a wilder, looser style than some of his Judge Dredd work and almost has a wood cut print look in black and white. The scenes with the Sky Chariot are really beautiful. The comic also has some humor usually tied to Slaine's sidekick Ukko. It's an interesting comic world writer/co-creator Pat Mills has created in Slaine. I'd say fans of the old 70s Marvel Conan comics and fans of sword and sorcerer fantasy novels would find things to like about Slaine and this collection.

Very Conan-esque, with a bit more grounding in the Celtic mythos.
