This is actually 2 books in 1, both of which are indispensable for long-time Slaine fans.

The first, "The Book of Scars", is a kind of "What If?" story that was serialised earier this year in 2000AD. As well as celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Slaine's first appearance, it also marks the end of Clint Langley's 10-year tenure as the regular Slaine artist (Simon Davis is picking up the artistic reins next year).

Langley illustrates the framing sequence for "Book of Scars", with other chapters being handled by Slaine legends Mick McMahon, Glenn Fabry & Simon Bisley, plus Langley himself (in the style of the late Massimo Belardinelli). Each chapter is prefaced by a 1-page introduction by the artist (and Pat Mills in the case of Belardinelli).

The second part of the book is "The Art of Slaine", a 130-page review of every Slaine cover from 2000AD, plus many of the covers from the various Slaine collected editions. There are commentaries from the artists involved and other 2000AD fans (including Jock & Garth Ennis).

The slaine saga continues and this is enough to get this book.Though most part of the book is of all 2000ad slaine covers along with info and comments of/about the slaine artists through the last 30 years!!!I alwayes hoped they would publish something like this.A perfect book to add to my slaine collection.I am sure next Slaine story and artist will worth as much as all the previous ones did.

I got really excited about this when it appeared in my recommendations. I was a big fan of Slaine back in the day, as illustrated by great artists such as Mike McMahon, Simon Bisley and glenn Fabry. This is a nicely produced hardback celebrating 30 years of the big guy. However, the content, in my opinion, leaves much to be desired. Two thirds of the book is taken up with reprinting Slaine covers of 2000ad with fairly pointless annotations. The new content is by some of the artists listed above but lacks the quality and charm of their earlier work. I can't take to Clint langley's computer collages at all, I stopped reading Slaine when he took over as artist. If you're a completely avid fan of Slaine maybe you'll like it (but then I guess you'd already own this material in some other form) Not for me though; I'm sending mine back.
