This is a film that that is greater than the sum of its parts in my opinion. A bad script, and by extension bad acting actually do little to harm it. In fact the worst (though still enjoyable) parts of this film are the most derivative scenes, of which there are plenty. War of the Worlds and Independence Day are probably the most plagiarised, but any sci-fi afficianado will spot plenty of stolen scenes.
I suppose what really redeemed this film was the action scenes, as well as the most engaging alien threat committed to film since the aforementioned War of the Worlds remake. Make no mistake, the aliens are not as threatening or original as can be found elsewhere, but they do have a sense of overwhelming doom that most end of the world films really fail to convey.
In the end, the relatively small budget is evident in the acting and not the action, and in reaching for the sky and coming up short this ambitious film is destined to garner bad reviews and a lot of hate, but will be considered a flawed gem by a cult following. And rightly so, as with the right mindset this is an enjoyable action flick that is easy on the brain (Unless you happen to star in the film. Watch it, you'll see what I mean).
I can't deny the graphics were beautiful, but the story lacked substance and I found it hard to care for any of the characters at all. Eric Balfour I'm sorry to say was a very poor leading man and I couldn't feel any emotion or yearn for survival coming from the character at all (which is meant to be the point). Donald Faison was not bad here, but there wasn't enough of him in the story (he should have been the lead) and Brittany Daniel here was completely miscast - she should stick to comedy where she shines.
All in all, I'd avoid this if you've seen Cloverfield, because it's almost the same story without the shaky camera work.
The Story: After a party, five friends awaken in the morning to find that L.A. is under attack. Strange lights are coming from the sky that are enchanting people who look towards it, causing them to vanish. Soon it becomes a fight for survival as they learn that humanity is being snuffed out by the terrifying beings that have come from the ships above.
The film has got a bit of a bashing for the acting and the actors, the cast are mainly from tele programmes and personally I had a lot of goodwill towards The Guy From Dexter, The Guy From Haven, The Guy From Scrubs etc so I was biased towards liking most of the characters. The acting was more than a little B movie in places but it didn't ruin the film for me.
As for the storyline - Personally I liked it, similar to Cloverfield it stays with one group of people and doesn't explain things that they do not understand. It is the story of how a normal guy finds a way to fight back through the right circumstances falling into place.
This is mainly a special effects film and it punches well above its weight, although a lot of the monsters and spacecraft seem a bit borrowed from other films it all looks mighty impressive with some good set piece full on battles as well as scary monsters chasing characters.
This won't win any awards or be on many peoples favourite film of the year list but it's enjoyable in it's own way as long as your expectations aren't too high. Certainly doesn't deserve some of the kickings it got from some quarters!
Firstly, this film kept me entertained all the way through; at no point did i look at my watch or stare repeatedly away from the screen. Most times i know roughly what to expect from a film; in this instance i didn't assume something along the lines of Citizen Kane or some braindead romcom - what i got was a good honest alien invasion film with a little bit of innovation, a few surprises and some cliches, acting which will never win any oscars, some very good action sequences, and decent special effects, considering the budget. I never over analyse a film when i'm watching it (as some filmgoers do), this spoils my entertainment, which to be honest is what we all want, isn't it, to be entertained?
As for the Blu-Ray presentation itself - picture quality is good, the sound (DTS HD-A/Master) is first rate.
A great addition to my film collection.
