This second book in a trilogy sees Sal and Skilly set off on a quest into the interior. As hinted in Sal's dream, they are followed and have no choice but to use their incomplete training in the Change in order to survive.

There are two major political power groups when it comes to utilising change energy, as far as Sal and Shilly are concerned. The Stone Mages, with whom their renegade guardian and helper Lodo was associated, and the Sky Wardens. They have a type of elemental control, and the Sky Wardens are looking for the two S's. Amusingly, the Sky Wardens can use seagulls to spy, this gives them the moniker 'sea rats', which I quite enjoy, when talked about by those who do not look kindly about the Sky Warden group.
