Whether or not you are willing to stump up the cash for these headphones is a personal choice, as they are at the higher end of what I would be willing to pay for headphones. If you do decide to go for these Skullcandy aviators, I doubt you will be disappointed in terms of value for money.

The sound quality really is exceptional, the headphones are not bass-heavy as you might expect, but there is a lot of mid-range clarity that works well on a variety of different types of music. Sometimes I feel I am sacrificing nuance in the music in favour of portability when I buy mp3s. I was, therefore, pleasantly surprised that the headphones were able to bring out nuances (or perhaps create nuances) in mp3s that I had not heard with my previous (Bose) headphones.

I also tried out some spoken word podcasts and they were also much improved with these headphones, with voices much clearer and louder than I had expected.

The headphones are optimised for use with Apple products but I also experimented with using them to listen to music on my Android phone. When my phone rang, I was able to answer it through the "MIC3 in-line control" and speak to the person on the other end of the line through the headphones' in-line mic. Once the phone call ended, my music continued automatically. iPhone and iPad users will also have the advantage of being able to use the in-line control to control volume, this did not work with my phone or (non-Apple) mp3 player.

Being in my mid-thirties, I did worry that the styling of the headphones might look ridiculous when worn by a non-teenager... but these headphones are incredibly tastefully designed, with a subtle retro feel and polycarbonate speaker covers which are see-through.

I've owned my pair of Aviators since early July, over three months, so now long enough to justify an informed opinion.

First off, I own the brown and gold versions and they look absolutely incredible. Besides practically everyone at work picking them up off my desk to admire them, I've had three people stop me in the street or on the train to ask what make they are, they're that beautiful. Although there is small skull logo just above each ear piece, it's not overly obvious these are Skullcandy's, not being as overstated as the other `phones in their range (which at the age of 44 I wouldn't touch with a barge pole).

Now to the sound quality and here I'm not quite sure, even after three months. What I can say is they're extremely clear. When paired with my 6th gen iPod Nano, the bass is too low and the trebles too high: not so bad with classical or pop but just not good enough for my Metallica, Motorhead and other metal. However, I admit this is probably more due to the audio deficiencies of the iPod rather than any fault of the Skullcandy's. When paired with my Nokia N8, my metal sounds better as the device has more output power which helps accentuate the lows more, though still not as much as I'd like. EDIT 12th Jan 2013: having now tried some other premium headphones, I have to issue a word of caution about the Skullcandys. They do not sound like any other headphones, even more expensive ones. As I've already said the bass is quite light and trebles high but your ears do eventually get used to them. However, if you then go and use other high quality headphones that have decent bass levels, they will sound muddy next to the Skulls even though they're clearly not. So be warned... if you like high amounts of bass, the Skulls are probably not for you.

I've put up with rubbish in-ear and earbud earphones for too long and I decided to treat myself to some proper headphones or "cans". I spent an age umm-ing and ahh-ing and reading conflicting reviews, but after one late evening I bit the bullet and went for these Skullcandy Aviators (Gold & Brown). They come incredibly well packaged and it took a good fifteen minutes to get them out of the box, but this didn't bother me as, unlike some, this signifies quality to me. Carefully extracting them I marvelled at how gorgeous they looked, reminiscent of the gold & brown Rayban Aviators that inspired the design. The cord is fabric to reduce tangling and is a good length (1.3 metres) for connecting to your phone or ipod that you keep in your pocket. Unless you're a giant the reach from player to head is fine, even for you lot that keep your device in your jeans pocket and your jeans round your ankles. Walking around with your arse out, seriously people.

The control piece looks great and works fine with my ipod and there's some limited functionality with my Samsung Galaxy s2 (pause works, volume control doesn't). And when you plug it in? I've rediscovered music, honestly my collection has never sounded so good. I'm not an "audiophile", so it's difficult to describe it perfectly, but basically it sounds like each individual instrument is playing on it's own layer, distinct yet in-sync. I've listened to some songs and it's like hearing them for the first time. I mostly listen to guitar/bass/drum/front man bands, with a bit of dance and electro in the mix, swing, jazz and well pretty much everything in between. They all sound great.

Couldn't recommend them more highly.
