Mark Shand embarks on a completely insane trip to Indonesia, obviously bored with the English weather. He goes in search of cannabals in the Indonesian outback and inevitably upsets the locals with his sarcastic wit at the risk of being eaten. Shand writes the most readable travel biography it has been my privilege to read. At times puts you on the edge of your seat, at others rolling on the floor in fits of laughter. The book is balanced perfectly and in my opinion "a bloody good read". If you like light hearted travel books, you'll love this.

If you are like me and enjoy reading about someone's travel adventures in exotic and different places and harbor an interest in anthropology, human behavior and history you'll enjoy this book.

I enjoyed the author's and friends' adventure into unknown forests and rivers meeting some dangerous and interesting characters in places that had little if any contact with the outside white world.

The only criticism I have is that the whole adventure went so quickly and I was left with wanting to know more about the peoples, their way of life, and the places they had visited. There is a lot about the travel part but the book is short on the people part, I thought. That said I would recommend this book to anyone I mentioned in the beginning of my comment. It was interesting and had an element of tension and thrill with their encounters with the different tribes they met.

It's not as good as Travels with my Elephant, but I suspect that Indonesia is not as interesting as the Indian countryside, so the dropoff in interest on by part is inescapable.
