In this book, author Emma-Sue Prince takes us on a journey through the 7 skills for the future; adaptability, critical thinking, empathy, integrity, resilience, being proactive, and optimism. The opening chapter on ‘The World we are living in’ is a timely reminder that these skills are needed now more than ever and the advancement in technology presents the risk of these skills not being developed as naturally as they once were. Emma-Sue provides a tangible and modern take on the necessity for these skills now more than even before exploring each skill in detail.
Each skill is given the time and space to breathe while the reader takes the opportunity to review their understanding of and relationship with the skill. Emma-Sue shares the importance of each skills, what it looks like in action and how it can be enhanced. Emma-Sue includes real-life examples of each skill being used, and this further enhances the reading and learning experience. Emma-Sue also makes a strong case for the power the accompanying workshop has in supporting learners to raise their awareness of each skill through experiencing them in a live environment. I am confident the workshops will become as popular as the book.
Through sharing her personal journey, Emma-Sue evidences how we do not need to be defined by life’s challenges and how she faced them head-on; using these skills to create the life she desired and deserved. I appreciate that these skills were not designed by Emma-Sue but identified as the skills she had called upon to build success in her life and overcome its obstacles.
A must-read for anyone seeking to develop personally and professionally, and not at the surface level but deep change that brings around lasting impact. As a coach, I'll be adding this to my very select list of recommended reading for my clients, and I am confident it will positively impact them as it has me.
The sections designed to make you stop and think and then consciously try out the techniques described are undoubtedly the most useful, but by far the most riveting parts are the case studies. There is so much to be gained by understanding how people have applied the coaching to their own lives.
I had trouble locating the book after it arrived in my school, Wimbledon School of English, as my managers had already earmarked it as potential material for the "Young Leaders" course to be taught at our junior summer schools this year!
I really liked the way in which Emma Sue provides case studies to illustrate each of the 7 skills and also that she has provided links and suggestions for other resources to use.
A great resource: definitely a book to keep and refer to on an ongoing basis!
