Sketchbook Confidential is a collection of sketchbooks from 41 renowned artists. You can feel their inspiration and excitement for art through their art and commentary.

There are sketches on abstract imagery, figure drawings, landscapes, and many more, whether imaginary or sketched plein-air. Some are quite colourfully painted I don't know if they should be called sketches. It's not all pencils and ink.

Each artist only has a brief 4 pages of coverage. Good thing is you can get to sample lots of different work, and artists' websites are included.

It's a nice inspiring read.

The list of artists included are:

* Robert T. Barrett
* Dan Beck
* William Berra
* Roberto (Bob) Cardinale
* Erin Currier

All artists and even many non-artists love looking at artists' sketchbooks. This book allows you to step inside the sketchbooks of over 40 artists. There is a small bio of each artist at the back. The work show is very varied and inspirational from portraits to landscapes to animal drawing to architecture. Some of the work is very contemporary, some traditional. This book offers a good mix. Very good selection of sketches by professional artists, and non-scary explanations as to how they are made.

HASH(0x95e770f0) out of 5 stars Suitable for Classroom Use 16 Nov. 2010
By S. Burton - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I hope my review doesn't sink this book; because I teach art lessons I tend to look at books for their usefulness and suitability in teaching art to children. This book contains a great sampling of a huge variety of professional artists' work from their sketchbooks. All types of artwork are represented, even sculpture.

My favorite part about this book is that I can hand it to my nine- and twelve-year-old students and let them look at it. There are no traditional nudes (there are a few guys without shirts [arms crossed over their chests or back view], a sketch of a distant statute, and a female bust who may not be clad, but nothing explicit). There is no overtly offensive or scary material in here. While it is not designed for children, young people can benefit from and be inspired by the many styles and variety of subject matter of the different artists. I think this book will encourage young people to draw, draw, draw.

Each artist's entry is four pages and features a brief bio, brief comments by the artist on their style of work or use of materials or feelings about their work--that sort of thing. The main part of each of those four pages is covered by samples from the artist's sketchbooks. These aren't step-by-step instructions, though you can sometimes see how an artist progressed through a piece. There are no projects to complete. It's a book to inspire and inform.

Subject matter includes figures, portraits, scenery, architecture, animals, abstracts, still life, weaving, jewelry design, and dragons; emphasis is on people and landscapes. All the usual types of media are represented.

HASH(0x95fe98a0) out of 5 stars Great collection ! 19 Mar. 2011
By Albatross - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
It is a collector's book for sure. As some reviews already mentioned, it has a very good collection of sketches, but not really sure if it they were private. Surprisingly, it also has some brief thoughts from the artists which is a good read in itself. There are some awesome impressionist/realist art works along with some great sketch works.

I love books that give me a glimpse into how artists use their sketchbooks, and loved this book. A wide range of artist styles are covered with both photos and thoughts about the sketching process. Chock full of inspiration.

HASH(0x95fe9af8) out of 5 stars Beautiful and Inspiring 15 Oct. 2012
By booksy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is filled with beautiful sketches from a variety of artists. Each artist explains his/her sketching style, motivation, and materials, accompanied by 2-3 pages of their own sketches. Many styles and media are shown, from small travel oils to character illustrations, and even designs and layouts for 3D work.

I really appreciated that this book was a standard size with large-ish pictures, and the type was not too small like a lot of the recent art books. It's printed in full color on matte paper, similar to an actual sketchbook, which adds to the experience. I loved looking at the pictures.

Reading this book made me want to go sketch! Highly recommended.
