The Unimaginary Friend is a delicious treat of a story, wrapped up in Guy’s wonderful, humorous story-telling and Pete’s spectacular illustrations which complement the story perfectly: a book to be savoured – or devoured - in one sitting.
‘Ol Skeleton Keys may be a little scary on the eyes, even though he’s a rather dapper chap, but goodness, is he THE most marvellous creation of a brilliant imagination. Which is just perfect, as this is a story wholeheartedly celebrating the power and wonder of the imagination.
Imagine if what we imagined could become unimaginary, no longer trapped in our minds, but joining us in the real world: what a brilliant concept! Mr Keys became unimaginary many years before the story he shares with the reader. He is a fantastically engaging character – a real gentleman of bones with a set of keys for fingers which open portals to other places– using old-fashioned language and creating new vocabulary in a playful and clever way. Fantabulant!
And strange things can happen when the imagination runs wild.
Skeleton Keys introduces us to ten-year-old Ben Bunsen on his tenth birthday. Ben’s family moves around a lot which has made it difficult for him to form real friendships. But he does have an imaginary friend, the Gorblimey, who is always there for him – in his imagination. After a disastrous birthday party, Ben imagines the Gorblimey into existence. At last, he has a best friend, of a rather nervous and fearful disposition, but one who is prepared to protect Ben.
Enter Skelton Keys! He has felt ‘The Twitch’ that warns him a dangerous unimaginary friend is on the loose, and he is on a single-minded mission to send it to Oblivion. Unfortunately for Ben, the unimaginary he has set his keys on is the gentle, nervous and kind-natured Gorblimey! Could Skeleton Keys have made a mistake, even though his Twitch is never wrong?
So begins an incredibly fast-paced, fun-filled adventure with just the right amount of delightful scariness … an adventure brimming with secrets to be unravelled, danger to be overcome and unimaginary friendships to enjoy.
There is just so much for young readers to enjoy in this story which is perfect for 7-9 year olds. I’m definitely a fan of ‘Ol Mr Keys and am really looking forward to the next time he shares one of his stories.

An all around fun adventure for the younger reader.
If you are between 7-9 and like monsters (reasonably cute ones), pirates (reasonably nastyish ones) and talking skeletons with a sense of humour (let’s face it they are always smiling!) then Skeleton Keys might just be what you need!
Oh, and remember... no matter what they say... your parents were just like you once! 😉

How I zipped through this tale of friends present, past and forgotten. Because that’s what it’s all about – keeping and believing in your friends. There’s a twist, of course, and the narrator is Skeleton Keys, a fantastic skeleton with a splendid vocabulary and keys on the ends of his fingers. These keys open doors to new places, even places that don’t have doors. In this book Skeleton Keys tells the story of a boy called Ben Bunsen, who finds his monstery imaginary friend - the Gorblimey - no longer in his head but right in front of him. In real life! So what happened to the other imaginary friends he had before?... You'll see. And if that wasn't exciting enough, with Skeleton’s curious keys Ben discovers a door to oblivion and behind it a clue to a family mystery. This has such a great ending, but you’ll just have to read it! There are great illustrations by the brilliant PETE WILLIAMSON – I especially love the booming and malapropping pirate, BeardBeard. He’s just one in a cast of brilliant characters that includes Daisy, with her head on back to front, the curiously cuddly Gorblimey and, of course, the dapper, clackety Skeleton Keys himself. This will delight younger middle-grade readers who like their adventures to come with a dash of wicked humour and a pinch of dark delights.

Ben Bunsen has spent his life being shunted from one seaside town to a next and struggles to settle and make friends. When not one single person turns up to his birthday party, Ben is lost and confused and turns to the one person he can rely on, his imaginary friend Gorblimey. But his desperate desire for a real friend sparks of a chain of events that leads to a whole lot of trouble and mayhem for everyone who knows him when our narrator Skeleton Keys knocks at his door. For Skeleton Keys is convinced that when imaginary friends become unimaginary, his job is to find them and cast them into the far off world of Oblivion but for once his intuition is so far away from the mark, he fails to spot the real danger. Can Ben protect Gorblimey and stop the unimaginary friend who is truly a threat? Packed with thrills, spills and spooky imaginings, this is wildly inventive children’s writing at its’ best. Who hasn't wondered what a certain key in their set of keys might actually be for? A long forgotten desk drawer, a cupboard, a gate, a long lost door? Well, the narrator and reader's companion of this story (Skeleton Keys), has 10 keys (instead of fingers), and he knows exactly where they will take him - it might be places you'd rather not go! Keys open gateways to possibilities, and this story is full of them. The main protagonist, Ben, who is ten years old, struggles through life with no friends, apart from those of his imagination (the Gorblimey and Daisy). The central theme to the book is friendship, one that all children will need to deal with at some point: Who should he trust? Will his friends come to his birthday party? Why does his dad struggle to believe him so much? What should you do about a friend who makes the wrong choices? Can he rescue his kidnapped friend?
