Review

"The science... reads like the best of Michael Crichton. The machinations of government read like the best of David Baldacci. And the action and thrills read like the best of Clive Cussler. Rollins takes the best of all of these and creates an amazing thriller unlike any other."--Associated Press on Bloodline on THE EYE OF GOD

" . . . this is your summer beach read writ large."--New York Journal of Books on THE EYE OF GOD

"Rollins has done it again. Real history and science play a key role in all of the action, which never wanes. Amid all of the chaos are some terrific characters who get a chance to shine. Definitely keep an eye out for this one."--Library Journal (starred review) on THE EYE OF GOD

"The book has everything the genre demands: Nazis, ancient maps, alien life forms, a ticking nuclear clock, and exotic, deadly beasts. Rollins makes it all believable, and ties everything together in a satisfying climax that hints at more adventures to come."--Publishers Weekly on THE 6TH EXTINCTION

"Fans of the series and lovers of wall-to-wall action in general will have a great time. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: For speed freaks (narrative speed, that is), Rollins always delivers the goods. Readers, start your engines."--Booklist on THE 6TH EXTINCTION

The 6th Extinction is book 10 in the Sigma series and you don't need to have read the previous books in the series to enjoy this book. Although it wouldn't hurt to read them in the right order. Mostly because the series is good and it's interesting to follow the character lives throughout the books.

This book starts with the destruction of a remote military research station that not only kills every single scientist in the facility, but also every living thing within fifty square miles. Animals, plants, and yes even bacteria are killed and the infestation is spreading. Now this must find a way to stop it all.

This book takes us both to the jungles of South America and the icy world of Antarctica as the agents of Sigma has to find a way to stop the spreading that kills everything in its way.

The book is split into two parts; Commander Gray Pierce and others travelers to Antarctica looking for the answers below the ice and Painter Crowe and his group is after the scientist that created the scourge and who was kidnapped when the military research station was destroyed. I preferred the Antarctic part of the book, it was most interesting with the lost world under the ice and also the one that felt most adventurous.

Meanwhile, Crowe and his team are after the scientist that was kidnapped by the evil man that wanted to destroy the world that we know. The problem for me with the storyline was that It just got to scientific sometimes, too much scientific babble that dragged the story a bit. It was fundamentally interesting the idea that something could be so devastation dangerous that it could kill everything alive, but it just sometimes felt like the scientific babble just went on and on.

By Parm TOP 500 REVIEWER on 12 Aug. 2014

Review:

Reading a James Rollins is always a pleasure, he is an author who combines so many of my personal reading pleasures, there is the action of the story, the historic past of the back story, the familiar character of Sigma mixed with new faces, new bad guys(and girls) and a plot that is usually mind bogglingly twisty. Like all well told lies (according to the films/books) the best told lie or fiction, the one that people will really believe, is the one that contains as much truth as possible.

This is the true genius of James Rollins thrillers, the scope and depth of research is staggering, but then the author takes that, adds in his own knowledge and skills, and wraps it up in his… well,… convoluted mind is the only concept I can think to use and out comes a story, a story so crazy, so bizarre, yet so plausible that it scares the hell out of me reading it.

Each sigma tale shows how far mankind’s technological growth has outstripped its growth of morality, maybe, as part of the story shows we do need to reach for the immortality gene and live lives long enough to experience the folly of our mistakes and grab for profit over morality, to truly start to gain some wisdom and stop abusing the planet?

6th Extinction as with many Rollins tales leave me not wanting to talk too much about the plot, because to give anything away would be annoying as hell for me, so I won’t do it to another. I did however find that tied around all of the fantastic plot, and world ending disasters there was also a great deal of personal plot and growth for Sigma characters, the continual integration of the new with Jason, who continues to grow into a sigma star of the future, old favourites in Monk and of course Kowalski (also a surprise cameo of some really old characters).

Just finished this book after a few late nights! Difficult to put down and a great story line. I don't want to post a spoiler but there were a number of firsts with this book. A pretty unique story line, fast-paced action and a really strong ending. I have read so many books with a rushed ending that leave me deflated, almost as if a deadline was looming and it was refreshing to read a book with some good twists right up to the end. The other good thing about this book is that I would class it as asexual and not specifically written to appeal to males or females. Just a sprinkle of love interest, no sex, and enough action, gun info and geographical information to appeal to any male. Enjoyed it!

I'm an avid fan of James Rollins having read every book of his and this is one in a very very long line of great reads, he never lets us down with action packed adventures involving our past, present and future. With so much of the science behind his books being true how much faith can we have that we haven't already ruined our beautiful planet and what can we do to stop our own extinction or are we marking it worse for ourselves. For people like me that love James Rollins books there's a book club on Facebook called Sigma force base camp come check us out

What can i say James Rollins does it again. An absolutely brilliant concept which as always is throughly researched and investigated by James and woven into historical fact and a bit of historical fiction to give us an all round stunning thriller. on this occasion the team is split in three with one team battling the elements and much more in Antartica and another in the depths of the Brazilian rainforest all being guided by Kat back at base.Cant wait for the next instalment.
