Product Description

Product Description

Sir John Gielgud is joined by an outstanding repertory of actors - including Dame Peggy Ashcroft, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Lee Remick, Ian Richardson and Julian Glover - in this pioneering, imaginative series demonstrating the immense variety and emotional impact of English-language poetry, from the fourteenth century to the contemporary era.

Screened in 1984 and compiled by writer and poet Anthony Thwaite, Six Centuries of Verse was the first television series to provide a systematic and chronological overview of the art, taking in Chaucer, the Medieval and Renaissance periods, Shakespeare, the Metaphysical poets, Milton, the Romantic period and modernism, through to Philip Larkin and Ted Hughes; the chosen poems, both classics and overlooked treasures, are placed into context historically and geographically and read in richly evocative settings.

I saw this when it was first shown, years ago and I've had a very poor copy on VHS so I am more excited than I can say about finally getting it on DVD. It is the most superb selection of poetry and the readers are of the best. Julian Glover giving a rendition of Beowolf, with inserts of the original language is an enormous treat. Ashcroft, Richardson and Gielgud just sitting reading the recognition scene from Lear brings one to tears. Yes, I love everything about this series.

A beautiful and definitive televisual outing for great British poetry read by some of the finest reciters of poetry in atmospheric imaginative settings.I have probably one of the largest private collections of recordings of classic poetry ranging from records and all other home formats John ,Gielgud first recorded definitive recitals of great poems along with Edith Evans in the 1930's for two wonderful 78rpm record sets "The Voice of Poetry" and to have him doing the same on these lovely videos is pure magic. If you love English poetry this beautiful Television series from the 1980's is a "Must Have" for your collection.

This was a present for someone who works in the acting industry, and they loved it. It's fascinating to hear the poems from so many different times read by such excellent actors. Something to be treasured.

A splendid overview of English verse (and a nod to several Americans for good measure), read with resounding depth and beauty by a small galaxy of Britain's finest. Several high points would have to include Julian Glover's inspired reading of a passage from 'Beowulf', mixing modern and ancient English, a duet of Ralph Richardson and John Gielgud reciting a scene from Shakespeare, a spirited enactment of Chaucer's The Pardoner's Tale, and the incomparable Ian Richardson's beautifully sensitive reading of Milton's 'Paradise Lost', as well as his reading of Gerard Manly Hopkins' 'The Wind Hover'--so ecstatically gorgeous it will send chills down your spine. But there is not one segment in this 16-part series which misses the mark for the perfect combination of the informative and the sheer joy of beautiful words beautifully read. My only complaint with this series is that it wasn't longer! I could have gladly had each segment run to 60 minutes rather than thirty, or had another sixteen episodes: it was truly that captivating.
