'Sita's Ascent' by Vayu Naidu is a stunning retelling of the ancient Indian epic Ramayana, told from the perspective of various characters and their relationship to, and around, the heroine, Sita.

I am something of a Ramayana-enthusiast and have read countless interpretations of the story from across the globe. Never, however, have I read a retelling quite as remarkable as this one.

From the very first page I found myself swimming in the beautiful, sublime poetry of Vayu Naidu's words. Her linguistic ability is astounding and the rich, luxurious language she uses create such evocative images that it is impossible not to see, feel and taste every single word of the story.

The book chronicles Sita's story from the moment she is banished from Rama's kingdom (from false questions about her fidelity), through her time in the Sage Valmiki's hermitage, the birth of her son(s) and her final decision to leave the mortal earth. Each and every page is gifted with a gambit of emotional offerings and I found myself laughing at the hilarious comedy of one page and wiping away tears of sadness on the next.

The way that the writer connects the characters with the reader are unlike anything I have ever read before- the moment between Hanuman and the fallen Lakshmana (for me) is one of the most moving and powerful pieces of writing I have EVER read and the birth of Lava (I feel) exemplifies the real magic and uniqueness of this book. Vayu Naidu is able to create a Sita who is both divine, as well as human. We marvel at her incredible power and deific qualities but also empathise and identify with her pain, her struggles, her loves and her losses; those that we feel are part of us too.

'Sita's Ascent' is a gift.

A beautiful testament to the power of both storytelling and to Sita; as a figure of divine humanity who will continue to inspire millions of people across the world with her story, her struggle and her ascent.

I'll edit this review later when I've finished this poetical book but what I can say now is that I'm liking it so much I'm reading it slower and slower. The complexity of Vayu's re-told mythic tale, richly re-imagined by a great StoryTeller-turned-StoryWriter (Dr Naidu is the first storyteller in the world to earn a Phd for her performance work, re-engineering academic textuality with great verve back towards literature's deepest roots in the loose and magical Oral Tradition) is rich beyond compare. Sheer joy which sadly I know must end too soon! That's the problem with the world: you always have to return while you're still in it. But if you fancy a brief escape from ordinary life, here's a vision of Sita which offers it in spades!

June 2013 - Yes it did stop, sadly - in April. I stretched it out as long as I could, which was pleasant as this vision of the Ramayana's aftermath re-lit the joss stick of the original in my imagination, embedding it there with sparkling freshness.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unique take on a popular epic. 31 Jan. 2013
By Brajesh - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Unique take on an epic which is house-hold story for most of us. Using memory of key characters as the voice of narration the story begins once Sita is left behind at Valmiki's ashram and ends at Lav-Kush's first meeting with Ram. In between a series of characters go down the memory lane. I particularly liked the chapters of Hanuman, Lakshman and Mandodari. Hanumnan doesn't speak a word but the narration is loud. Lakshman is featured on his death-bed and his remembering of the encounter with goddess Nidra is quite brilliant. Mandodari's take on Sita's early life is interesting. Overall a new take on the epic, would recommend a read for all mythological buffs.
