Every once in a while, a book comes along that stays in my mind long after I've read the last page. The Sister falls into that select category.

Spanning forty years, it tells the story of a group of people who are unknowingly linked to a serial killer in one way or another. As time goes on these people meet up to help catch the murderer, who is as cunning as he is evil.

A tremendous amount of work has gone into this book and it shows. There are a lot of characters in the story, each one different from the next, so the reader does need to concentrate, but it's worth staying with. One of my favourite characters is Kennedy, the DCI, who because of a certain weakness he has, becomes an easy target for blackmail by the killer. However, Kennedy is determined to catch the man no matter what he has to do to achieve that goal.

There are so many different words I could use to describe this book, unique, compelling, addictive, poignant, eerie, moving, and I could still go on. But if I had to pick just one word to do this book justice, the choice would be simple.
Outstanding.

This is a huge novel and not due to the author dragging it out or over-describing things. It's set over decades and all over the world. If I had to choose one genre for it, I would find it impossible. The characters' lives intertwine, twist and turn, drawing in how past experiences develop people and their futures. It's psychological, paranormal, historical, crime, mystery and more - all rolled into one big story.
It's very well written and, although it is a long book, the pace is perfect. It jumps back and forth in time and place with ease. The timing is spot on, as each part takes you somewhere else of relevance, but leaves you hanging to get back to the other parts of the story. Then it comes together and all makes sense.
There is so much more to this book than the title or the pitch suggest. You'll have to read it to believe me. I wouldn't know where to start with reviewing and writing about the storyline. It would be a book in itself.
Well worth your money.

Written with superb skill, the wonderful detail makes every character in this novel come to life. Even the actions are crafted in such a way as to seem real.
The well-executed omnipresent point of view shows the story like a camera above each character showing their actions and then diving into their thoughts.
The Sister is a long read with multiple characters and a tortuous plot. It took me weeks to finish the novel. At first I found the story hard to get into—not knowing which characters were being referred to with 'he' or 'she' and no name forthcoming until later in the grizzly scene. Although each section seemed unrelated at first, I found a central theme as I read further and began to understand the slant of the story. The end brought everything into alignment and a satisfying conclusion whilst leaving open the opportunity to read further novels.

This book was recommended to me by a follower on Goodreads, and I'm glad I chose to read it. It is very well written and full of suspense and twists and turns throughout the whole book.

Some of the characters you really start to feel hate for and ones you feel sorry for, it was a very thought provoking and emotional read.
Without giving anything away at all, this book is one to definitely buy, you won't be disappointed.

If you like suspense and crime thrillers this is the book for you. It starts in Cornwall in the sixties then moves to London later on where the crimes in the sixties and present day all interlink with each other and without knowing it, the characters all have a part to play in solving the crime.

Brilliant.
Max China built more thrills, twists, and danger into The Sister than one could find on a mountainous road. The forty-year journey through the minds and lives of characters as real and alive as your next door neighbors is tightly stitched together by the life and death spiritual struggle between good and evil.
A former nun, The Sister, spins one of the fascinating threads in this rich reading tapestry. A soulless serial killer threads his way through the lives of the characters as relentlessly as discharged arrow seeking the bull’s-eye.
If I could pen one word of criticism about this unique and compelling China novel it would be that it breathes life into secret fears. It’s not a relaxing bedtime read. Instead, the author’s skill ensnares readers and drags them through a book that they can’t stop reading and will never forget.

This book had so so many threads. It was difficult to keep track of them all. It had a galloping pace, twists turns and dead ends. While the novel is whole, it has left some excellent loose ends that will lead into and form yet more story lines for other books, look forward to reading them.
The book had it all murder, thriller, psychic and hard headed reporter. The only obvious outcome for me was Millers employer. The rest of it kept me on the edge of my seat.
I can imagine that for some readers the many characters and plot lines, might lead them to give up, but really stay with it. Worth it when you see how the story develops at the end when most pieces of the jig saw fall into place.
