Do read the instructions that come with it!
I'd have appreciated a better instruction leaflet.
It gives cooking times for various grains, but I only want it for cooking rice. The instructions give the time for White Rice, but not for Brown or Wholegrain Rice, which Is a shame.
I found that whatever rice I cooked, I used the same amount of rice and water (250g Rice and 600ml Water) - the only variation was in the cooking time. White Rice takes 10-12 Minutes, as stated on the instructions, BUT.....Brown Basmati Rice takes 23 Minutes. My Microwave is 1000 Watts - if your Microwave is a lower Wattage, you'll need to allow more cooking time.
I really like this steamer, but I do wish Sistema would include a better instruction leaflet with these Microwave Steamers!
As a novice rice cooker - all my hob attempts have been useless, I started by buying a bag of basmati rice from ASDA and just gauging how long it generally takes and how much water is required. For a one person portion you probably need a bit more water as more will evaporate in the steamer but more than that it is 1 part water, 2 parts by volume of water. I don't even rinse my rice and it doesn't stick together - especially if I use stock instead of plain water. You need to experiment slightly with your rice and your microwave....the beauty about this is there is no babysitting - it's done when it goes ping(leave it for about 10 mins before stirring, you can check it but just don't stir). If it seems a bit wet give it another 2 mins, otherwise let it sit with the lid on for a bit. My two portion basmati rice(1 measuring cupful) takes around 14 minutes to cook in my 800w microwave.
I've used two different basmati rices and Thai jasmine rice - all are superb. One of my 'game changer' devices - would buy another in heartbeat.
I don't know how it compares to other microwave rice cookers but I know it beats my old tefal 8in1 hands down. I have a small microwave and it fits perfectly, snug but perfect.
Quick tip - there are two lids;an inner lid and a final clip-on outer lid. The holes in the two lids are not supposed to align(the water would just evaporate out otherwise), you are meant to have the holes so they don't align, ideally at 90 degrees, as the outer lid is supposed to condense the liquid back in.
I don't know about stainage as I haven't used turmeric in my pilau rice(I do everything on the hob as usual and then tip it into the rice cooker to cook the rice) but if it did stain and I didn't like it I would buy another for my none staining rice - it's that effective and cheap.
I bought it after having read the brilliant reviews, however half of the item melted on the first use, even when I put it for less time tan what it was advised in the instructions.
I used this about 3 times. On the last use it completely melted in my microwave nearly setting it on fire and burning my kitchen down in the process. This product is a complete hazard. My kitchen smelt like burnt plastic for days.
I would like to mention that I read the reviews before hand and made sure I thoroughly read the instructions. Despite putting in the right quantities for the right time it still melted. I am not impressed and would not recommend to anyone. I was hoping to use this product a lot since I am about to have a baby and thought it would be convenient - what a waste of money! I am so annoyed!
What's more- amazon (the seller in this case) does not give me the option for a refund on this order! What a con! If anyone knows how I can go about getting a refund please reply/comment on my review.thank you so much.
O and one more thing - when it originally came it did not come sealed in anything and the pressure component was missing, so I had to return it for a replacement- make of that what you will....
Two cups of rice, 500mL of water, 10 minutes at 800W, five minutes rest, mix and then serve.
