Having got pretty much back on track after the events of the last book, with the evil Sullivan finally gone from their lives, three years later, the Adams family are at a wedding when they bump into one of Matthew's niece's friends Jasmine. The initial meeting is uncomfortable enough but the events in the car park mean that Matthew is reluctantly forced to accompany her home for her safety. Next thing, Matthew wakes up in a strange hotel room with blood on his hands and little recollection of what happened. Then a video appears online making his situation even more shocking and he even starts to doubt himself. As things slowly start coming back, it appears evident that he has to try and get to the bottom of things himself before he can face the authorities. And so begins a really rather frenetic roller coaster ride which kept me completely rapt throughout and left me totally satisfied at its conclusion.
Boy did I love this book. I thought the series opener was brilliant and I was wondering how on earth the author would manage to even match it let alone top it, but top it she well and truly did. Poor Matthew, just as things were starting to go good for him, Becky, their daughter Mia and niece Ashley someone rears up, intent on taking all from him. Hitting him every which way, undermining his job, his marriage, his family and his liberty in oh so deliciously evil ways and, for the majority of the book, for no discernible reason. Well, I say that, with hindsight there were quite a few clues that I obviously missed. Some great sleight of hand by the author there, well done! In my defense, I must have got so emotionally involved in what was happening to the lovely Matthew that it all just passed me by really! I did start to cotton on eventually but it wasn't until just before all was revealed and the true nature of Jasmine was uncovered.
All in all, a cracking follow up book to a series opener that I also really enjoyed. I have book three all lined up and ready to go but I think i need a little more time to recover before I see what the author does to Matthew next time.
Sins of the Father is the second instalment featuring DI Matthew Adams. I would recommend reading “After She’s Gone” first but it can be read as a stand-alone novel.
Sheryl once again has given us a tense nail-biting thriller that will have you reading page after page, chapter after chapter. The characters are believable, and mostly likeable. After getting to know DI Matthew Adams and his family in the first novel I was rooting for them this time around and became so caught up in what was going on that I was in tears by the end of the book. The tension is unbelievable – NEVER before have I cried whilst reading a thriller. Sheryl Browne has a way of telling a story that really pulls you in and twists your heart with each scene.
This is a fast paced, gripping action thriller. As with all of Sheryl’s books I would suggest finding yourself a comfy chair, switch off your phones and get yourself a large glass of wine and some chocolate… you will need it!
PS. Hope book 4 is in the pipeline
Well done on another wonderfully written story . Not enough stars for me I would give it much more than 5!
You do not really need to read the first book, as this one touches on what has previously happened, but the reader will have more fun to read the first one first.
Great work as always . On with the next!!
DI Adams finds himself in a situation where he has to run and try and clear his name. I did wonder how he was going to get out of this one, as it seemed everything was stacking up against him.
Another great book from Sheryl Browne and I have the third book ready to read!
