Pretenders ~ Singles

Amazon.co.uk

Ignoring the "Precious" side of Chrissie Hynde's rocking and writing, The Singles still captures a good bit of what was special about her in the '80s. Bopping assertions of strength ("Brass in Pocket"), wistful dreaminess ("Talk of the Town"), flat-out weepers ("2000 Miles"), her tough-mom attitude ("Middle of the Road")--the many sides of her seven-inches are generously surveyed herein. --Rickey Wright

Format: Audio CD
What a delicious dish of melodic rock and pop! From the opening number Stop Your Sobbing to their lovely interpretation of I Got You Babe that closes the album, this is a non-stop feast for the ears.
Chrissie Hynde is an expert vocalist, perfectly capturing the mood of every song with her nuanced vocals, whilst the rest of the band moves in perfect synth. The guitar playing is amongst the best you'll find in any rock music from the 1980s. Almost all of the songs are masterpieces, but my special favourites include Stop Your Sobbing, Kid, Brass In Pocket, Talk Of The Town, Message Of Love, Don't Get Me Wrong and I Got You Babe.
The music is tender and sensual at times, raucous and ebullient at others. Those who enjoy The Pretenders might also like their contemporaries Pat Benatar, The Cars or Joan Jet. This album should however appeal to a wide spectrum of people who appreciate tuneful and intelligent rock music that is still in touch with its roots.

By Brit Boy TOP 500 REVIEWER on 14 Jan. 2015
Format: Audio CD
This classic greatest hits album from the Pretenders features all of the band's UK hit singles up until it's release in 1987. Unfortunately, this means that the famous ballad 'I'll Stand By You', which came later in 1994, isn't on it. The only other downside is that with the album being so old now, it doesn't sound quite as good as it would do if it was released today and remastered. Nevertheless, the sound quality is still satisfying enough for me, and there are plenty of other newer options available including The Pretenders Greatest Hits

However, 'The Singles' still remains a mostly very comprehensive collection. These guys always had a positive sound, so this playlist has a overall 'feel-good' vive. The Pretenders were a band that turned out some excellent melodic rock and perfect pop in the 1980s. My personal favourite tracks on here are 'Back on the Chain Gang', the Christmas song classic '2000 Miles' and 'Brass in Pocket'. If you are still new to the Pretenders, then 'The Singles' is a great starting point.

Like The Police & The Jam (reviewed elsewhere), The Pretenders were a kind of brilliant, transcendent hybrid band that seemed to exist in the late 70's early 80's; completely in touch with roots rock n roll but making it very contemporary in their own style. I guess all the best bands do that. It doesn't help to have a foxy sultry Yank bird as the front(wo)man either. Brass In Pocket was the 1st UK #1 of the 80's (Shame the quality didn't last). In focusing on the following 6 tracks alone you have a decent pop career: Kid (one of the best guitar solos ever); Talk Of The Town (gorgeous chiming Rickenbacker chords); Message Of Love (great call & response riff); Back On The Chain Gang (lovely sweet guitar melody); Show Me (great, yearning lyrics); Don't Get Me Wrong (perfect pop). Add in the rest and you're one of the greats.

One of my all time favourite albums. I could listen to this CD over and over again. It contains all the Pretenders top hits and makes for really good listening. Takes you back and I strongly recommend this for anyone with good taste. A great collection of tunes.

Of course Pretenders is all about Chrissie Hynde but she couldn't have done it without a really tight band behind her. Together they have got a crisp clear melodic sound that means they always sound fresh and bright. great stuff.

I won't have look for a further album for the pretenders. It has all their big hits, the one duet with UB40 is on this and the other one missing. Like some albums their is always just the odd one missing. Suppose you can't have everything.

The Pretenders an English/American Rock/Pop band formed in Hereford back in 1978 with Singer/Songwriter
'Chrissie Hynde' (lead vocals and rhythm guitar) along with 'James Honeyman-Scott' (lead guitar/ keyboard
and backing vocalist) 'Pete Farndon' ( bass guitar and backing vocalist) and 'Martin Chambers' (drums, backing
vocals and percussion)
Though after 'James Honeyman's' death in 1982 and the dismisal of 'Pete Fardon' around the same time changes
in line-up had to obviously be made, 'Robbie McIntosh' (lead guitar) and 'Malcolm Foster' (bass) ensured the group
continued.
The group had quite a run of hits during the late 70's and through to the mid 80's, they only actually achieved the
one Chart-Topper which was 'Brass In The Pocket' (1979) though with 'UB40' 'Chrissie' did hit the heights of the
chart again with the 'Cher-Sonny Bono' hit of the 60's 'I Got You Babe' (1985)
Among the groups other chart successes 'Talk Of The Town' (Chart '8' 1980) 'Message Of Love' (Chart '11' 1981)
'I Go To Sleep' (Chart '7' also 1981) 'Back In The Chain Gang' (Chart '17' 1982) '2000 Miles' a Christmas number
'15' hit back in 1983 'Don't Get Me Wrong' (Chart '10' 1986) and 'Hymn To Her' (Chart '8' also 1986)
All the Hits the group achieved up to 1986 are on-board this release, 'Chrissie Hynde' and 'Mark Chambers' continue
to perform, the groups other members having changed some.
I think much of the groups new-wave punk/rock appeal was the laid-back and perhaps protest image 'Chrissie Hynde'
portrayed during her performances and vocal-approach on record.
Of course as many will know 'Chrissie' has released a solo album in recent times.
