OK, so the last thing we need right now is another New Order compilation! And it more than smacks of the record company cashing in on New Order's back catalogue - but most fans admit that until now, there hasn't been a decent follow-up to 1987's "Substance". Each attempt since then has been extremely flawed - the shockingly bad "best of" released in 1994 didn't contain classics such as Ceremony or Temptation, and although "Retro" contained some gems, it was far too messy & fanboy-ish for it's own good. The import-only "International" wasn't bad, but being a single disc again meant that important songs missed the tracklisting.
With "Singles" you get two discs containing every single New Order have released to date. Nothing is frustratingly omitted, and there are 7" versions of Ceremony, Temptation & Thieves Like Us available on CD for the first time. Finally, a comprehensive "best of" compilation of one of the most influential groups of the last 20+ years. Some of the greatest songs ever written are contained on these two little discs - buy it!

I am an avid fan of New Order and I have all there albums including 2 preivous "best of's" International & Substance and this is my favourite one. The most simple reason is that you can have all there singles up to now on one package and what fantastic singles they were! Another reason is that it has every single is in the original format. For example "Temptation" & "Confusion" were on Substance but they were versions re-recorded for that album & the only way to have the original before this album, was to of bought the vinyl 7" single over 22 years ago! which I do have, being a fan. But this is no good if I want listen to it in my car, or put on my mp3 player to listen to. I even like the new stuff which some people don't appriciate for some reason, Crystal, Here to Stay, Waiting for the sirens call, are all brilliant pop/rock/dance tunes.

..of course it doesn't do everything. New Order are a dance remix band as well as a 7" single band, and some of the edits (e.g. Spooky, The Perfect Kiss) are not as good as the album or extended versions, although I far prefer some of the shorter versions here (Shellshock, State of the Nation). As other reviewers have said, not all the versions are truly the single versions (e.g. Bizarre Love Triangle), so it's not as perfect as it might be. But still there are enough different versions of old songs to keep old fans happy, and as an introduction to the band it's near perfect (Much better than Best of, or International and Substance only takes you to 1987) The standard barely dips throughout and the last two tracks are gems.

For the New Order fan, there have been numerous 'best ofs' so far. First came the excellent 'Substance', but now several albums down the line it was obviously out of date and needed either a 'Substance 2' or better still, a proper chronological collection of all their singles in one package.

Not much to ask? You'd be surprised. First came a poor single disc 'Best of' which criminally missed off some of NO's best tracks. Then came a 'Rest of' remixes collection.....And then came a four cd boxed set which was possibly the worst 'best of' I have ever seen in my life.

Basically what I am saying is that they were all appalling, but this one is brilliant. I hardly need comment on the actual songs, needless to say a collection of all the New Order singles is not going to be anything other than fantastic.

Superb songs, superbly compiled and collected. If only more bands would follow this example.

I love New Order and despite a few minor niggles about edits and remixes and so on I think it would be a great introduction to anyone unfamiliar with the band. Sure, maybe the more recent material doesn't quite stand up to the earlier stuff, but that is a matter of taste and I'm sure a more casual pop listener may not worry about such things. It is very definitely a great selection of indie/dance/rock and personally I could listen to it on repeat for hours on end. However! The CD version for sure sounds absolutely terrible. I'm no audiophile, but the sound quality on this is just terrible. It's not so bad on a regular stereo, but on my little ipod earphones it just distorts so badly. So, just beware. If not for this we'd be looking at 5 stars for sure.

A career-spanning double CD from the above-average electro-pop group who emerged organically from the ending of post-punk act Joy Division: the rather dubiously named New Order. Over 31 tracks and 2 hours-and-a-bit the descriptively titled digitally-remastered Singles collates all of the 45's that the band released between the years 1981 and 2005. That quarter century brought mixed rewards as this somewhat uneven compilation shows.

The formidable Disc One - from their halcyon days of the early- to mid-eighties - includes some of the highlights of their long-running career: euphoric indie dance-floor favourites such as 'Bizarre Love Triangle', 'Blue Monday', 'Temptation', and 'True Faith'. These and other tracks placed them in a firmament of exciting electronic acts playing popular and progressive music around that time, such as Associates, Cabaret Voltaire, Depeche Mode, Heaven 17, OMD, Psychic TV, Soft Cell, and The Human League. The second disc - leading from the unnecessary remix 'Blue Monday `88' to the present day - proves to be far less consistently interesting. It offers succour to those who argue the value of their output has depreciated with the passage of time, which the rather questionable decision to order the material chronologically magnifies. Only the deafest of apologists for the group would look to argue that non-descript lead single from 2005's Waiting for the Sirens 'Krafty' is anywhere near as good as 1981's elegiac 'Ceremony'. We can only speculate on the reasons for that: possibly the result of long lay-offs for the group in 1993 and 2001; or possibly the result of too much engagement with overlapping side projects Electronic, Monaco and The Other Two.
