Product Description

Volume 3 in our successful ongoing series covering the recordings by Joe Tex released on singles for the Dial label. Each volume is chronologically sequenced and featuring the A-side and B-side of each 45, we now reach the years 1969-1972. Chart wise Buying a Book was a top 10 R&B hit for Joe, and That's The Way reached the top 50. The rasping funk of I Gotcha topped the R&B charts in 1971, also reaching # 2 on the Hot 100.

4.0 out of 5 stars Knowing Joe Tex's music better 20 May 2015
By Sammy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
A good collection which introduced me to music I'm unfamiliar with from a singer I knew primarily from two hit songs played on the radio.
Not all the material is great, but Joe Tex puts it over. This cd gives me a better appreciation of the artist. If you love r&b from the soul days as I do this is worthwhile adding to one's collection.

POSITIVE POINTS:

1 The current set reflects how a proper singles collection is done: all the singles, a and b-sides, sequenced chronologically. In this set, there are 10 rare gems, all making their CD debut. This is a collector’s dream come true.
2 The sound is very well remastered.
3 There is an excellent 8-page booklet, with an informative essay by Clive Richardson. There is a first class discography with label & number and chart positions. There are also many colourful pictures of 45 rpm singles labels. Good job!

NEGATIVE POINT:

1 Expensive! There are 4 volumes: (1) Vol. 1 (1964-66), (2) Vol. 2 (1967-68), (3) Vol. 3 (1969-72), and (4) Vol. 4 (1972-76). I manage to get Volumes 1 and 3 through Marketplace at a reasonable price, but Volumes 1 and 4 are still very expensive. But the most rare and expensive of all is “First on the Dial” (his earliest singles from 1961 – 1964). Fortunately most of the songs are now available online.

COMPLETE SINGLES DISCOGRAPHY:

Although Joe Tex has 24 charted entries on Billboard R&B Chart, I have just finished compiling A Complete Singles Discography, and found that he actually has 81 singles (charted and uncharted, a and b-sides, from 1955 to 1981: only 159 songs instead of 162 songs because 3 were repeated releases). His labels are (1) King (1955 – 1957), (2) Ace (1958 – 1960), (3) Anna (1960 – 1961), (4) Jalynne (1961), (5) Dial (1961 – 1979), (6) Atlantic (1968, as member of Soul Clan), (7) Epic (1977 – 1978), (8) Polydor (1980), and (9) Handshake (1981).

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Joe Tex was born Joseph Arrington Jr. on August 8, 1933 in Rogers, Texas. He has a lengthy illustrious recording career, with 4 No. 1 million sellers. His feud with James Brown was well documented. In 1966, he converted to the Muslim faith and changed name to “Joseph Hazziez” in July 1972. He died of a heart attack on August 12, 1982 (only age 49).

If you are looking for his Greatest Hits single disc, I would recommend “25 All Time Greatest Hits” (Varese, 2000). If you are looking for his earliest releases on King and Ace, I would recommend “Yum Yum Yum: The Early Years 1955 – 1962” (Jasmine, 2015, 40 songs). For a wider general coverage of his entire career, I would recommend “This Is Gold” (Goldies, 3CDs). The current set, with complete coverage of singles from 1969 – 1972 and great sound, is unfortunately more for completest or collectors.
