Now, if you are new to overlocking, as I was back in December, it can be difficult at first, especially threading. You do have to be prepared to invest some time & patience, many hours have been spent perfecting my technique. There are some excellent tutorials on you tube. Like anything the more you do it, the easier it becomes. I now wouldn't be without an overlocker as it gives all my sewing projects that extra professional feel with nice looking edges.
To make changing threads easier, when changing spools cut the threads off at the spool itself and then all you have to do is tie the thread for the new spools on to this and pull it through the machine. I would recommend though sit for a few hours & learn your machine, as this is my 2nd machine I have found that different brands require different tension settings, etc, even if you are using the same thread.
LED Lights, give a sort of a almost blue glow, but these are the same as my Singer sewer and for me I find these easier to work with than the normal more yellow light.
Big sewing area (my Janome was I think 7.5 inches, whereas this is 10.5, and for me that makes a huge difference as it means your fabric has more space to be held on,) I find it makes feeding material through a lot more accurate.
Stitching, looks really professional - but you have to work hard to get the perfect look, play round with the tension and settings on the side, eventually you will achieve the perfect result honest.
Suction feet - great idea, as it means the overlocker doesn't move around when you are overlocking.
Speed - this seems quicker than my original overlocker. It may be, or it may just be that because I am used to using Singer I feel more confident in putting my foot down & whizzing on. This afternoon I made 4 cushion covers & my husband was quite surprised how quickly the existing ones in the lounge were replaced with these new ones. (He was also grateful I was replacing, not adding more cushions, as there is talk I have a worrying cushion addiction due to amount we have in our home!)
Instructions - OMG these really are quite terrible, learn from me, have a look on the internet for threading guide. The manual just makes it seem it like a chinese puzzle. For ages I thought the machine was faulty as the thread just kept breaking every time I tried to do any overlocking. Nope, turns out that there is an extra part of threading the yellow thread guide that wasn't clear. You had to take it back over the knife blade, who knew, well not me till I found a tutorial on the internet.
Foot rise - now on my Janome it quite happily overlocks with the foot up in the air, so of course I made the assumption this would to. Oh no, this was another thing I learnt after hours of thinking the machine was faulty. Once I put the foot down it was as happy as Larry sewing away.
Not quiet, but then I don't think any overlocker is going to be. This is noiser than my Janome.
To do free arm you have to remove the larger part of the bottom of the machine - not easy, be careful as I can see it could easily snap a bit of. Inside here you will find your accessories, which is a nice thing, to have that storage. However, as I say difficult to remove.
I decided that I would keep this and my Janome for a month to see which one I preferred & sell the looser of the battle. I have had this for 3 days and the Janome is already in its box, packaged up, for sale. I didn't need 4 weeks to work out this is the one that I prefer. Although there have been a few teething issues, that is because it seems each brand are different and you have to invest the time with each one getting to know the machine and learning to love it.
Just a top tip, there is a certain shop, beginning with L, four letters, you get your groceries there to, that I have discovered sells these machines across the UK and abroad for a lot lot lot less than you see them in other places, including online and I mean over £100 less! Last sold in December 2016 for £129.99 I think. The only difference is they don't come with 4 x spools of thread and a dust cover oh and the instruction manual has the shop word on the front cover. The overlocker is exactly 100% the same. Being frank, the dust cover is cheap thin plastic and won't last long and the spools of thread, well i've been buying 4 on Amazon for £8.99 and they do the job perfectly. Unfortunately, they have only recently had them in Dec 16, but hopefully will be seen again at some point so if you can wait, it is a good way to get this machine and save yourself money.
