The only thing Lady Ciara Sheffield has in common with the Earl of Hadley is their frequent mentions in the gossip columns. But while Mad, Bad Had-ley defies society and courts scandal with abandon, all Ciara wants is to be left alone. A wealthy widow and a notable scientist, Ciara has no wish to take her place amongst the people who say she poisoned her husband.

Yet the more she hides, the worse the rumours become, until she fears for her son's safety. Keeping quiet won't save her, so when a mysterious manuscript throws Hadley in her path, they form an uneasy alliance. For the best way to hide rumours is with scandal, or even an engagement...

As familiar as the rake and the blue-stocking routine is, it's still good fun, as Elliott proves in the first of her CIRCLE OF SIN trilogy. Ciara hasn't had much luck with men in her life, yet her scholarly pursuits have made her focused and strong. Lucas is wayward, aimless, and bored. Though he soon begins to see the error of his ways, of course, his wit and cheeky behaviour doesn't change - thankfully. His good qualities are revealed by friends, his relationship with his uncle and his treatment of young Peregrine. But his interactions with Ciara prove he's not all tamed. Ciara's strength is well portrayed, but her insecurities are deep rooted and understandable, which makes her growing relationship with Lucas a delight.

However, once the action moves out of London things did feel a little rushed. The things that needed to happen felt a bit crow-barred in as space ran out, spoiling the good strong build up. It's still enjoyable, but weak compared to what had gone before.

Overall this is a lovely read, filled with beautifully rounded characters, sweet romance as well as lots of heat. Things look very promising for the next - To Surrender to a Rogue. A good beginning.

Lady Ciara Sheffield is a young widow with an eight-year-old son, Peregrine "Perry". The serious-minded scholar is an expert in chemistry. This is how the rumors of her husband's death began. The inquest of Sheffield's death showed no proof of foul play. Yet Sheffield's horrid relatives have helped rumors spread that Ciara had poisoned her husband. The nephew, Arthur Battersham, and his mother are trying to reopen the inquest. They are high in Society and well connected. With their whispering into the right ears, they could very well succeed in their attempt. Arthur has gambled himself into debt, which is why Ciara believes the Sheffield relatives are campaigning to steal away her son, by proving her unfit to be a mother. Should they win custody of Perry, they would also control his grand inheritance. Being called the Wicked Witch of Pont Street, Ciara keeps to herself and shields Perry from Society's barbs. Her close friends are the five women, two of which are elderly, which make up the Circle of Scientific Sibyls, affectionately known as the Circle of Sin. The other "Sinners" decide Ciara needs to get a fiancé with enough stature and connections in Society to counter the malicious machinations of Sheffield's relatives. And who better to play the part of a sham courtship than Lucas Bingham, the Earl of Hadley.

Lucas has never cared what Society thought of him. No matter how outrageous he behaves, Society loves him. Everyone loves nothing more than to read the morning paper to see what wild thing "Mad, Bad Had-ley" has recently done. However, Lucas does have a soft spot. His love for his uncle, Sir Henry Phelps, clearly shines through to those who know Lucas. Sir Henry has recently discovered what seems to be a lost manuscript by Hippocrates.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and also Andrea Pickens' Lady Spies series so Emailed 'Cara' Directly. This is the body of my Email. She very kindly emailed me back thanking me for letting me know how much I enjoyed the book.
The paragraphs below are copied straight from my email to her.

"You have probably already received loads of praise for the above 'launch' book of the Circle of Sin. Well I already own the books about the 3 lady spies which were great and I hope your alter ego Andrea is working hard on another series.

But that is diverting me from my reason for writing, Ciara's book arrived from Amazon(what would I do without them -you cannot buy most of the Authors available on Amazon in English bookshops. A lot of Danielle Steele and co but who wants to read them. Last Monday morning the post arrived bringing To Sin with a Scoundrel and as I have just retired I did not have to 'wait til I got home from work' to start reading. Basically, Bottom-line, absolutely the best, I could not put it down, story was great, brilliant characters, funny, sad and with the added 'bite' of two feisty children. I have already preordered the next 'episode' and look forward to the 'interaction' of Black Jack and Alessa. The 'excerpt' at the back of 'scoundrel' book shows that chapter 1 starts perfectly, immediately following on from the rescue of Perry and Isa.

Pure Genius.
