When Dig Down was released last year, I was very underwhelmed. It seemed like Muse were heading in a very odd direction and after Drones, it seemed very timid. Then they released Though Contagion and things seemed a bit brighter. Something Human seemed ok if a little boring, but Dark Side certainly seemed to swing back to the better side. Then.....Muse released Pressure. This is frankly a masterpiece of a track and all the others started to fit together as one concept even though Muse claim this is not a concept album. The whole album as a set is frankly magnificent. In addition the pre-released 5 tracks, Algorithm will be used in more films, trailers and soundtracks than you could shake a stick at and is pure sci-fi excellence. Break It To Me is a wonderful mix of electronica and 80's rap, Propaganda is....different, but thoroughly excellent, but my stand out track is Get Up and Fight. Its quite simply brilliant. In my opinion, this album is above both Drones, 2nd Law, Showbiz and possibly Resistance. Its Muse doing what they do best. Sticking two fingers up at critics and enjoying themselves and this is why they are one of the biggest bands in the world and Simulation Theory will be fresh in 10, 20, 30 years time long after the tosh in the top 40 has long been forgotten. 5 stars.

I am a big fan of this band and when I first got the CD I was a bit confused if it was my bag or not.However after repeated listens it really grows on you and I listened to it on repeat yesterday.It's fantastic,the first three tracks are some the best music Muse have ever done.This will be amazing when played live,its going to be a bit difficult to get tickets,the demand is going to be huge.As they do the best Rock Show I have ever scene and that includes Queen and Pink Floyd.Also they only seem to be doing one show in the UK at the moment ,lets hope that changes.

I can't make up my mind if this is just an album full of really polished and excellent songs, or more a running commentary on the state of the UK today. Or possibly a mixture of both?

Simulation theory is alive and vibrant. It starts of with the song "Algorithm". Which begs the question of what if we were all code, or digital, only soon to be replaced by our creators. THIS. MEANS. WAR. WITH. OUR. CREATORS. Indeed. The next song. "The dark side" appears to be the monologue of a man or entity spiralling into the void. "you would be scared, if you would know my pain, and if you could see the things I am able to see". This trend continues. Each song with a different theme, but all of which revolve around the central concept of a world gone wrong. A world being let down and betrayed by those who are most supposed to be responsible and honest and upfront.

The song "Break it to me" is a good example of this. It mirrors how I am sure many people felt when the conservatives we're humming and harring over their so called "Brexit" plans. [ A Brexit they seem determined never to deliver] I don't wish to get political here but the contents of SImulation Theory DEMANDS it. Because the reality that some may not like, is much of this album is directly motivated by the duplicitous nature of our so called "leaders" of late.

The album however does something brilliant in spite of it's well earned anger and wrath. It lifts the listener up. Demands that we don't fall into despair. As the song "Dig Down" will demonstrate. "Face the fireing squad against all the odds and find a way" The song is kind of gospally, as you will well notice in the acoustic version, but it earns the right to be on the strength of the lyrics alone.

Lyrics which I must add, are as strong as the music is in this album. Simulation Theory is exceptionally polished. I hate to say it's a masterpiece, although it very well might be. It is the album of this sorry time. A time when all the snakes raise up their heads, trying to devour us whole. But we must do as Matt and the lads do in Simulation Theory. Be brave, remain strong. We have a future to win.

Conclusion. This is an album for the every man. A soundtrack for our lives in this ever more dystopian world that we find ourselves living in. That it was always going to be good, is beyond question. [it's Muse, afterall] That it could be great... no, PHENOMENAL however. On the back of the strength of "Drones" I never saw them topping it, but somehow with Simulation Theory they very well may have done. Most average Joes or Joans should BUY Simulation Theory.

Muse have been doing this to me since the early days. I think "not as good as their previous wor.....oooo, now that's a great tune!" Then I get addicted to the new album and write musicals in my head that wrap around their work. Seriously , Drones is a WW1 musical in my head. But back to Simulation Theory...well...the line "This means war, with your creator!" From the opening track Algorithm is stuck in my head. It's Muse. It's friends having fun, doing what they enjoy, interpreting Matt's thoughts;and we fans either go along for the ride or complain. Personally, I love this album and am on board the train.

Muse have done it again with their 8th album. I was very intrigued as to what direction Muse would go after the amazing solid album of Drones.
I love the use of synths in this album, and the kind of retro 80s sound they were going for. There is great use of layered percussion instruments such as heard in the song 'Break It To Me'. I love the pop rock epic of 'Get Up and Fight' which is one of my favourite tracks. Of course songs like 'Pressure' and 'Blockades' are what I would call classic Muse songs that have a more guitar driven sound. I love how the albums opens with 'Algorithm' and 'The Dark Side' which both have that 80s inspired sound and sets the tone for the album.

I love this album, and I always new Muse would deliver another masterpiece. Amazing!!!!!

Muse revisit 80's electronica - advice is to get the deluxe version

The latest Muse album is an openly nostalgic revisit of 80's electronic music, notably aping John Carpenter's film soundtracks on tracks like Algorithm. It's interesting enough as an album and there are some good tracks (Pressure the clear stand out) but I would guess that for the average Muse fan the mass of electronic music and lack of guitars will be a hard sell. The deluxe version has very different, far more organic, versions of several songs added on where real instruments break through the wash of synthesisers revealing more pure song writing and these provide some much needed variation in sound.

So overall, not their best but till a good Muse album, but pay the extra for the deluxe version to hear the more organic versions of key tracks.
