Linda has recorded many different styles of music including folk, country and old standards from the Great American Songbook. She has proved her brilliance at all of them but, ultimately, her place in music history is assured by her pop-rock albums of the seventies. Of those albums, this is my favorite although Prisoner in disguise is a close second.
By the time Linda recorded this album, she had decided who her favorite songwriters were and what type of songs she was happy with. So here you get a Buddy Holly cover (It's so easy), two Warren Zevon songs (Carmelita, Poor poor pitiful me), a J D Souther song (Simple man simple dream) and an Eric Kaz song (Sorrow lives here) – all brilliant songs from sources that Linda had used before. Maybe I'm right, written by Robert Wachtel, is another excellent song. The album also includes outstanding covers of Blue bayou (Roy Orbison) and Tumbling dice (Rolling stones).
In amongst all those pop-rock songs, Linda went back to her roots and included two traditional songs that would seem to be out of place, except that Linda found a way to record them so that they blended in with the rest of the album without destroying them. The first is I never will marry, on which her friend, Dolly Parton, can clearly be heard on harmony vocals. The second, Old paint, is an even more unlikely inclusion, but it works superbly.
Every song here is a gem, although I particularly like Blue bayou, It's so easy, I never will marry and Old paint (not necessarily in that order). If you like Linda singing pop-rock music, you'll love this album.

It is hard to judge why Linda Ronstadt chooses to perform such a vast array of styles, but her incredible vocal talent allows her this luxury. She is truly comfortable with any style. It's So Easy is pop/rock at it's singalong best, Carmelita is social comment, and Ronstadt is arguably at her best on Blue Bayou, for me the outstanding track in terms of vocal performance and production. For sheer rockability, look no further than Poor Poor Pitiful Me, and her cover of The Stones' Tumbling Dice is probably better than the original. Even the hardest of souls will be touched by Simple Man, Simple Dream and I Never Will Marry, a duet with Dolly Parton. All in all this is country for people who are unsure of country, rock for people not totally at home with rock and pop for people who don't generally admit to liking pop. Marvel at Linda's vocal prowess and the superb production values, and treasure this truly outstanding album for years to come.

This re-mastered CD is expensive but worth every penny for me, even though I have the original vinyl and the later CD. The clarity and detail now coming off the disc is superb and if you want to hear the greatest voice of the 20th century singing in the style that took made her the top selling female rock siger of the 70's this is one you must have.

Quite simply, for me this is her best album. I have had a copy since the 70s and had to renew just recently. Poor, Poor Pitiful Me, Carmelita and Tumblin' Dice are my outstanding tracks, but then I have always enjoyed her faster paced songs. Buy and enjoy.

Linda Ronstadt is one of the finest female pop/rock vocalists in my opinion and this is one of her best albums. Backed up by the usual suspects (Waddy Wachtel, Pete Asher, Rick Marotta, Kenny Edwards) with additional appearances by JD Souther & Don Henley this is a musically near perfect album.

As a collection of songs this is a wonderful showcase for Ronstadt's soaring vocal range. From the laid back Blue Bayou to belting out the Rolling Stones Tumbling Dice and Warren Zevon's Poor poor pitiful me this is just so good! There is not a duff track on this album.

My only criticism it that it's quite short, but then it was released before CDs.

Five stars, no less! Highly recommended.

This for me is the best Ronstadt album every track is good the stand out tracks being her covers of It's So, Easy Poor Poor Pitiful Me and Blue Bayou. Other great tracks are Sorrow Lives Here , Simple Man, Old Paint and Carmelita. She has a brilliant voice and her song choices are spot on. She has made many other great albums but this is my favourite.

for any Linda fan. I played it in the car and sang along until my journeys end without realizing that I'd actually gone through the whole CD three times. Some real classic tracks - fantastic!
