Before deciding to return it, I wrote to their UK office in order to get a new watch. They never replied.
In short: I wouldn't recommend this drone.
The white controller is totally useless. It binds with the main unit, and looks to be ready to fly. But try and activate props as per manual it does a big fat nothing! Basically nothing on the controller works, not the gimbal movement, the launch nothing.
As per the GPS watch. This ticks some boxes, it does take off and move fine with the little joystick. But the tilt function for the gimbal does NOT work. So whats the use if you can't even adjust camera angle.
I did not buy this thing just to fly without a camera, or without a handheld controller! I bought it because I thought it would be small, compact for travel and videography.
I have asked over and over with the company for a solution. Can't get any answers that make any sense. No one seems to have any tech advice on the unit.
I am thinking I must have a dud unit, or at least a dud gimbal and controller. But then again, my watch is not functioning as it should because the gimbal adjust dial does not work!
My first flight was a dumb one, I thought i'd try it out in the garden (see Urban Dictionary definition of "muppet"). Hovered nicely, then I pressed the wrong button on the watch and it started it's orbit function. This would have been a really good time to have wished that i'd read the manual better as I watched the drone first fly into a connifer at about head height, I then grabbed a leg thinking i'd just catch it. But no... the drone wanted to be somewhere else and powered up hard and flew out of the connifer leaving me holding the detachable leg. Next, it really wanted to be elsewhere to continue on its orbit and promptly flew hard into the side of the house at gutter level. Next stop was to crash to the ground and I watched in horror as it landed hard on one of the motor arms and then the motors stopped. I was ready to accept that i'd just broken my new toy. (Bangs head - "it's not a toy!")
The only damage was that i'd taken the end off one of the props so in a stupidly dumb way, i've proven durability! What I should have done was just press the Hover button on the watch and it would have instantly stopped the commanded action.
Anyway, further flights have been in open space and drama free. I've also got the optional additional hand held transmitter which allows longer range control. So far i've only flown it about 250m away but at that distance it's mostly a dot and somewhat hard to determine orientation anyway but as far as the distance and control goes, no issues. Turning the (optional) controller from "Normal" mode to "Advanced" yielded a much more sporty drone and as long as you let it get GPS lock first in this mode, maintains the controlled flight characteristics. (This controller is NOT part of the normal follow drone but is an optional accessory).
Comments on the camera, the video is good though somewhat over sharp. If you're not comparing it to anything else then you'll be happy but i'm comparing to a Hero 4 Black which is quite unfair but because I can mount my Hero 4, there's no downside for me. However on the upside, because the drone came with a camera and waterproof camera housing, i've effectively added another sports action camera to any other activity whether it's on the drone or not so I viewed my purchase as a drone to provide a platform for my Hero 4 and got an additional action cam in the process. The included camera will accept SJCAM batteries and the lens size accepts SJCAM filters. I recommend adding a Neutral Density filter to aid motion blur and reduce prop blade interference in video. (See "Jello effect" videos on YouTube for details, it's not a drone issue as such but worth understanding) I bought this one QUMOX Ultra wide ND lens filter density for QUMOX SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi action camera I have two batteries for the drone and one camera battery wouldn't last for both so I would definitely recommend getting some extra camera batteries. Also note that when running the camera in 4K mode, the frame rate is 15fps compared with 30fps on a Hero 4. Again, not really a criticism, the Hero 4 alone costs half the price of the drone and because the gimbal takes any similar action cam, you can mount what's appropriate for your own purpose. Simiarly, would I risk my Hero 4 out over water? Maybe not :)
I saw someone comment elsewhere about the landing gear seeming frail. I disagree, it's "landing gear" to support the weight of the drone when landing or taking off, if you're looking to fly this full speed into trees then you're buying the wrong drone! The autoland puts it down gently and even my manual landings with the hand transmitter, it's pretty hard to be rough unless you're deliberately trying and even then, the landing gear is very flexible and has a lot of give.
Battery life - i'm always sceptical of claims and here it's claimed at up to 30 minutes. Yeah yeah... "up to etc.". Well I can happily report that the duration of flight is pretty much as claimed. It's going to be reduced if you want to keep changing altitude as that will cause a greater power draw but the flight time is pretty much as claimed, so very happy with that. It certainly flies long enough to invoke wifely comments such as "Are you done yet?"
I've been in touch with the UK guys at Simtoodrone.co.uk several times since purchase and can recommend them highly. So much so that I would STRONGLY suggest purchase from there because the aftercare has been outstanding.
