I have to admit....I couldn't get into this. There just wasn't the hook; there wasn't a catch that grabbed me and got me in. Sure, there's an explosion, and someone coming back from a long journey to a mysterious message, and a big secret that could hold the future for humankind...Bah. When I put it like that, it sounds like this book should be really exciting - and I'm sure it is! If you like that kind of thing. Which I just...didn't. I read the first few chapters and then skipped on, and eventually did the Kindle equivalent of putting it down and not picking it up again - which for me is skimming past it in my carousel every time I tried to find something to read!

I would, however, highly recommend the Ack-Ack Macaque series by the same author, so it's obviously just my taste in sci-fi!

I enjoyed this. Not as much as I enjoyed Ack-Ack Macaque but a good read.

Well, it's a promising start. An interesting story, with a few twists, and some good ideas - but ultimately I am disappointed. The writing just didn't catch my imagination. Good scifi needs more than just ideas, it needs to be well crafted literature. Powell has the potential to be a great writer on this evidence but the fluidity and articulation of the writing has to improve to get there. To be honest, it all seemed a bit rushed - scenes throughout the book are described perfunctorily and the picture isn't painted with the delicacy that is needed.
Kerp trying Gareth, it's really ok, just not true brilliance yet.

I really enjoyed this book. The concept was fascinating and I was intrigued by the modifications that the people made to themselves.

The only thing that would have improved the story for me would have been a little more character development. This was a fairly short novel so I think there was room to spend a bit more time getting to know the characters which would have made the ending ultimately more satisfying.

The world building was strong with lots of well-placed details. I look forward to reaching more by this author.

After being engrossed by the mad cap world of Ack-Ack, I wanted to try out Gareth's first foray into SF writing -. Certainly not disappointed... all that is required now is to find out what happens to the characters.... it can't be left like this!
