These are simple but effective if used in the right way. Not the best thing for splitting down through the grain - a grenade works much better for this. Splitting logs lengthways is what they do best but use in pairs as a single one will get stuck. They also work best on well seasoned wood but you should expect to use a sledgehammer on larger logs - I find 12"- 15" diameter logs up to a couple of feet long are about the limit for easy splitting.

great wedges but you will need to buy 2 of them, reason being when 1 wedge gets stuck you will need the other to free it. a very handy item if you are splitting logs.

Ordered two of these on Thursday evening - they were delivered on Saturday morning.

What can I say about the product? You'll need two, as mentioned in other reviews. It is probably best to wear ear defenders too as, when hitting it with a 14lb sledgehammer, it can be a bit noisy.

I've used them on a variety of species of wood. Eighteen inch long by 24 inch diameter conifer rings have been tackled. Whilst this used a fair amount of effort, chopping with a maul was simply not possible.

As expected, the paint is coming off. Also, the 'blunt' end is looking a bit battered - I've been advised by people who have similar wedges that this is normal.

It does what is says on the tin! good delivery, an advantage with this tool would be to have 2 of them, the one wedge does stick in the log and difficult to remove once driven in. A good idea for Amazon would be to sell these in pairs, with a little discount.

Certainly big and heavy. I have used them to split some 18 inch ash logs, work well but be prepared to but some effort in, its hard going, and make sure to use goggles as chips will fly. Think they could be sharper and will be grinding the edges prior to next use.

This is a heavy solid wedge. Totally let down by the lack of a narrow end. The end is at least 1.5cm thick with a very quick rounded edge. This means it doesn't drive down into the split opening it further but pushes the surface wood down into the split and doesn't work to split the log.
As lots of others have said some time on a grinder solves this but come on Silverline it should come ready to use.

Before purchasing these I read the comments some of which noted the wedges were too blunt. My assumption at that time was that people were expecting them to be "sharp" whereas they should have understood the need to split and not cut the wood. However, on receipt of two wedges I now understand and agree with those comments. My wedges have been ground and then rounded over making them impossible to drive into anything other than a large crack. I will sharpen them with a bench grinder, a trivial task if you have one, but if you don't have access to such a tool them you might want to consider an alternative product.

These wedges are big and solid will split anything we came across, remember to but two of them as you will need the second one to assist you if/when you get the first one stuck!
