I used this tester on the box full of batteries and found that around 40% still had a lot of their charge remaining. We had been using them in high draw items (camera, laser pointer etc) and then discarding them. This tester revealed that there was plenty of life left in them to power remote controls and clocks, wireless mouse and myriad other low draw items. Given the cost of premier alkaline batteries, and the number that I recovered from the recycling box this tester paid for itself after its first use.
The tester is reasonably well made and considering the likely light normal usage I expect it to last for a number of years. There is an analogue meter that indicates remaining charge on A and AA batteries when they touch the adjustable contacts on one side of the tester. You can also test PP3 9V batteries on the lower set of contacts on the front of the tester. Each of those battery types provide their own power for testing.
I found that batteries either tested completely empty (Red), almost full (lower green) or Full (green). Obviously the empty ones are ready for the recycle bin.
If you insert a PP3 9V into the tester then the power that it provides allows you to test standard (bayonet / screw-in) bulbs on the upper set of contacts on the front of the tester. I didn't find this feature particularly useful as it is normally fairly easy to see if an incandescent or low energy bulb has failed.
Of more use is the fuse tester. It's always frustrating if you *think* that a fuse has blown in a plug but can't be sure. Well, with the PP3 installed it is easy to check any fuse of the standard '13AMP' size.
This tester was a really good buy and resides very happily in my battery box.
Step in the battery/bulb/fuse tester. A handy gadget that will give you a reasonable indication of which batteries should be recycled and which still contain enough power to be useful. It's simple to use - slide the caliper wide enough to accommodate the battery you want to test and then slide it "closed" so that the battery is making good contact with the tester. The needle will move to indicate whether there's enough juice in the battery to do anything useful or not. The scale is coloure coded for ease of reading - red for dead, yellow for border-line a green for OK. There are different scales for different battery voltages (e.g. 1.5v, 9v and "button battery") and these are labelled with pretty small text.
While it claims to need a 9v battery to operate, I suspect that this is only if you want to test bulbs or fuses as it's given the right answer on all of the AA and AAAs that I've tested without having the 9v battery fitted.
Construction is "basic" and sometimes the moving caliper can prove a little sticky but otherwise it's sensibly put together, clearly laid out and functional. It does a great job of telling you which batteries you should keep for future use and which should be (properly) disposed of. It's relatively cheap although recently cheaper options have appeared.
For all of that it gets 4 stars.
