First off (in the order of discovery) I read the instructions and found that the connection to the vacuum cleaner mentioned in the product description wasn't optional but compulsory, because the dust can damage the sander if there's no vacuum cleaner connected. The black vacuum cleaner connection shown in the photo at the back of the sander is in a separate package and you insert it into the rear. So far so good. Unfortunately it and my vacuum cleaner didn't connect - wrong sizes - so I took a cardboard toilet roll centre and fitted that over the black attachment and my vacuum cleaner tube with tape. The toilet roll tube held, the vacuum cleaner held, but the special Silverline attachment kept falling out of the sander!! Unreal. Short of superglue I have no idea how to get the Silverline attachment to stay in the Silverline sander.
So I proceeded without the vacuum attached, deciding to settle instead for attaching the the vacuum cleaner every five minutes or so to clear out the dust from the sander. That might have worked if the sander had lasted that long. It only came with one piece of sanding paper, with the holes in all the right places, but after two minutes of very light sanding, one end tore off the sander, and after a couple of minutes so did the other.Read more ›
I bought this thinking it would sufficient for just doing a final sand of `easy fill', i.e. a very easy to sand material. Ignoring my Dad's advice (who is a qualified professional painter and decorator) I went ahead with the purchase. The sander seemed reasonably robust when it arrived and I wasn't bothered about the lack of hole punch for the dust collection holes (they are never that effective anyway).
I set to work, ensuring that I never used it more than 10 minutes at a time because the item is not rated for continuous use. Within half an hour it stopped. It wasn't hot. It hadn't overheated. It just came to a slow stop and never lived again. Unfortunately because there was a delay between buying it and using it, so I missed the return window by 6 days. Poo.
After speaking to my Dad he advised that Dewalt were the best. However I don't want to spend £140 on a sander! He uses it every day for work so I can see why that would be a good investment. Instead he has directed me to look at a Draper Expert 1/3 sheet orbital sander. He said Draper made tools for the trade but cheaply and was happy with his recent hot air gun purchase (doesn't take much to keep him happy). Anyway the expert range are rated for `continuous use' so you don't have to keep stopping and starting which is good if you just want to crack on and get the room done. After some digging around I found one from Tooltime for £32 with free delivery. I haven't received it yet so can't comment. I'm not being sponsored by Tooltime by the way, just trying to be helpful!
So in summary, you get what you pay for: No money = No quality
DON'T DO IT!!
Initially though about hiring a sander for the day but the hire price was identical to purchasing this one new. I just brought regular sandpaper and cut it to size - worked perfectly well. Would definately recommend.
