I'm a trade user and bought this sander for occasional use hence not buying a more expensive brand as I would have normally.

It's brilliant! It's very fast and feels very solid to use. Very little vibration too considering what it does. I have a smaller random orbital sander too by a different manufacturer but needed a heavier more powerful one too. So bought this and I'm not disappointed.

I've used it on 40m2 of timber decking with 40Grit sanding discs and it did the job very well and quickly. Because it's a relatively heavy and bulky machine, it's more suited to floors/horizontal pieces and less intricate areas. I wouldn't want to be using this machine vertically or overhead for too long.

The dust extraction on most machines isn't perfect so don't expect a dust free area when using this machine. I have to admit, the dust bag on this does do a fairly good job.

With regards to sanding discs flying off as mentioned in another review. Sadly, this is the nature of hook and loop design. This isn't just an issue with the Silverline backing plate. Whilst I too lost a couple of discs, this machine is no different than others I have used.
Better quality discs make all the difference! I haven't used the Silverline discs that came with this machine as I needed a courser grit, however, in my experience, Silverline consumables aren't usually of very good quality! Yet they often do so well in other areas.
I use SIA discs with this machine and they stay on very well. Sadly, once they come off they've had it. Which can be disappointing if it's an otherwise good disc still.
Basically, it's the discs that are the problem. Once the backing goes, they're ruined.

To gain more use out of a disc, let it do the work!

Having read other posts on the discs to use. I used only top quality German discs and have had excellent results. I never lost a single disc and they were very hard wearing.
I found the sander to be quite agressive in its ability to remove rust and paint. 60 Grit was too course. I was through to bare metal instantly. I I then changed down to 120 G to be more controlable. I have used the sander for 5 days of 8 hours aday virtually continous operation. ( Two beefy men taking it in turns) and the sander loves it. Definatley a recomend.
If you want to work on wood or something soft, you wont get a good finish but certainly will remove the rough

I bought this sander over 2 years ago after my Black and Decker slightly more expensive model broke down in 6 months.

I've given it real abuse: sanding for masively long periods, using it on tough surfaces, dropping it, using it to strip paint off metal etc and it has exceeded my expectations-i didn't expect it to last this well. I've used it with 40grit discs on wood through to 1200 grit discs with a soft backing plate on metal and have had a good finish right the way through. They are easy to change but you do have to line up the holes yourself.

I'm quite sensitive to noise and find it quite loud (though i'm not sure it started out this loud), but the vibration is ok and the lock function to fix it running is really useful, the dust bag is pretty good too. I've also had trouble with cheap discs coming unstuck, so quality discs are important-i think this is true of the more expensive models too though?

It's excellent value for the money in my view and, from checking reviews, i doubt you can find anything better for less than £80. I will probably replace mine with another in the near future.

My beloved Bosch sander finally gave up the ghost after fifteen years faithful service and so I started looking for a replacement. I am not using sanders as much as I used to and so felt I couldn't justify the expense of a new Bosch. After reading the generally positive reviews of this Silverline sander I felt it would be a reasonable alternative and ordered one. What a mistake!

The main problem with this machine is that it is not a true orbital sander. When starting, the action is rotary until you place the pad on the work piece. The resistance then created activates a counter weight that then produces a vibration motion that mimics orbital sanding. This means that for delicate work the sander tends to gouge into the material being sanded until it settles down.

The sander does however feel quite sturdy and reasonably well built and I would imagine it would prove quite effective on none delicate materials such as steel or wrought iron work.

As I was sanding a large Cedar garage door I could not risk damaging it further with this sander and decided to return it to Amazon and replace it with a Bosch (which is what I should have got in the first place!) What a difference - I am back in sanding heaven again!

I must applaud Amazon for their customer service. I contacted them on a Saturday to arrange return and the new Bosch arrived the following day - excellent.

Got it for sanding the joint on my earthstone worktops, and it has worked perfectly for those. I have also since used it for sanding down my kitchen table and chair before staining and varnishing them.

It has a nice speed adjust option, and the handle that comes out the front gives you some additional stability when using it. Dust bag works ok, but I have never used a tool where the dust bag was much cop so I would always suggest a breath mask and goggles when using any power tool.
