After trying, and failing, to read another one of her Harlequin Historical series where it's the 3 daughters of a vicar that are running a gaming hell-yeah right-I tried this book since I'd already purchased it.
Again Ms. Jarrett is trying the "implausible heroine" storyline-the heroine is housekeeper of a derelict manor(vacant of a lord for 4 years), but also the head of a smuggling ring. If that's not bad enough, the hero, a blue blooded second son and naval captain who just made his fortune in the war, but comes to inspect the ramshackle home to consider purchasing it.
There ensues the most plausible aspect of the story-as the heroine, who remember is the housekeeper, shows the hero around the manor, insulting him and being very rude the entire time! So implausible for the time period! While I try not to be a stickler for Historical accuracy, or lack thereof-when you have an author who seems to go out of their way to do so in every Historical romance they write-then it's time to start looking for different authors to read.
No stars-I'd advise you skip this book.
The book is boring, unrealistic at all, and did not move me at all.
Seems to me the words the characters spoke were forced and meaningless. The characters themselves were boring. She was too annoying and he was not male enough for me (now i do know its only a book but still) The transition from one point to another is very swift which I personally did not like.
Save your money and time and buy something else.
