Synopsis

The forerunner to "Lord of the Rings", "The Simarilion" fills in the background which lies behind the popular work, and gives the earlier history of Middle-earth, introducing some of the key characters.

From the Back Cover

The tales of 'The Silmarillion' tell of the First Age of Tolkien’s world. Long before the time of 'The Lord of the Rings', when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-earth and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the precious jewels containing the pure light of Valinor.

This fifth and final volume contains the two supplementary works to the 'Quenta Silmarillion': the 'Akallabêth', which recounts the downfall of the great island Kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and 'Of the Rings of Power', which tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age which form the basis of the epic tale of 'The Lord of the Rings'.
