Silknet snow socks are an 'easy fit' winter traction aid. You are supplied with two socks which can be fitted to your drive wheels within a matter of just a few minutes. Silknet is fitted with Heavy Duty straps on the face of the Snow Socks which allow you to fit and remove the socks easily while the supplied gloves allow fitment without getting dirty. Silknet have a patented design feature which actually pulls the fabric against the tyre to create a better adhesion to the tyre tread and at the same time create small folds and ripples in the centre of the snow sock fabric that creates better grip between the snow and the fabric. They were easy to put on and then eventually take off. not to over dramatise the fact. I could move our car from our road given the camber, but could easily do a 3-point turn once they were on! then a couple of us drove in cars to the park to sleigh down the hills and his car slid on the journey there and bumped into a post and ours didn't.
on the negative side, you can only drive a maximum of 40Kmh/25mph and given there is a tiny tear already after couple of hours driving, I am not convinced this will last long with the combination of iced and gritted roads.
I have vivid memories from a very icy 1970s winter of the rear of my old Ford wanting to slide all over the road and only holding it on line because of the experience gained during a misspent youth drifting my mother's cars, and then being amused by SWMBO (as a newly qualified driver) wondering why all around her were stranded while she drove past them up the hill to work in her very old and tired but (crucially) Front Wheel Drive Mini, with all its weight on the skinny little driving wheels.
I've tried fitting these socks on my car, and yes it is very easy (especially in the dry comfort of the garage), and these size 60 were snug on the 205/45 - 17" tyres. There is no tread at all in the sock, just the strong cloth, and if I had not seen a pair in action I would never have believed they could work. I was not impressed by the small pair of woollen gloves supplied in the kit, and have replaced them with some old waterproof builders gloves. The zip-up bag is only about 25x25x7cms and the kit squashes away neatly in a corner of the tiny boot in my car.
It is important to remember that these are an emergency escape device and are not intended for any great distance. They work at their best driving slowly on clean snow and ice; any grit (or exposed tarmac) will quickly destroy them, and if there is grit then they are redundant. For the sake of a minute each side to fit or remove (unlike the hassle of chains) there is no reason (other than finding a safe place to stop) to drive in the wrong mode.
I just hope I'll never need to use these.
So far there hasn't been a single snowday since, so whilst they have not worked in the way I expected, they are doing the job!
