“The departure of Amanda Burton has given this forensic drama a new lease of life.” The Sunday Times

The Meaning of Death - They may appear to be random killings, but Nikki and Leo are determined to find the links that could lead them to a serial killer – before he strikes again.
Mind and Body - An apparent suicide, a stabbing rampage by a paranoid schizophrenic and 17-year-old girl crushed by a train all lead the team to a care centre doctor.
Cargo - Four bodies are found in the Thames after a boat crash. Nikki, Leo and Harry investigate a tragic people-trafficking operation – and whether there could still be some survivors…
Terminus - The team is split as Harry deals with a hit-and-run accident, Leo investigates a fire that left a woman dead, and Nikki attends a hen night tragedy.
Body of Work - While Nikki's post-mortem of Harry's ex-girlfriend produces a devastating revelation, Leo investigates the apparent staged suicide of artist, Jimmy Triangle.
Supernova - Leo's investigation of the suicide of a 14-year-old girl evokes painful memories, while Nikki's case of a death of an elderly woman becomes ever more complicated.

Even if you don't like forensic science dramas, it's a well-written drama. I haven't watched the Amanda Burton era but for me the Nikki/Leo/Harry trio is just perfect. Series 9 is when we first get this trio.
The characters have believable emotional connections with each other and clearly different friendships- Leo behaves differently towards Nikki than he does to Harry. Harry and Nikki's friendship/relationship is particularly well-written. The writers have established that there is an attraction but have not written a cheesy "will they/won't they" plotline. Due to the fact that they are colleagues and the nature of their work, it is very hard for them to have an actual relationship and I think the writers portray this beautifully. The episodes also raise many ethical questions as well, which are worked into the story effectively.
Of course, there are some cliches but that's why it's so watchable. We know that Leo will get teary at the mention of wives and children, particularly children; Nikki will talk about her childhood in South Africa (in Series 12, they actually pay a visit!),get indignant, and wish that Harry would ask her out; Harry will sleep with any female apart from Nikki and will discover that one of the bodies he has to examine is a former girlfriend of his who is possibly pregnant with his child.
As much as I enjoy Waking The Dead, Silent Witness is better written.
Even from series nine and ten the will-they-won't-they chemistry between Harry and Nikki serves as a perfect background to the case that they are investigating, with the right amount of humour and seriousness in each episode.
I've found myself laughing out loud at Harry's jokes, crying with Leo with his personal tragedy, and rolling my eyes with Nikki at some of Harry's antics.
I hope that Silent Witness caries on for many, many more years with it's current cast, and can't wait for the new series at the beginning of next year :)
