About the Author

Kat Martin s bestselling novels include "Nothing But Velvet, Innocence Undone", and the Raines of Wind Canyon Series "Against the Wind, Against the Fire", and "Against the Law". Her book "Silk and Steel" was nominated for a RITA Award. She is a graduate of the University of California, where she majored in Anthropology and History, a background that helped to develop her interest in the past. "I love anything old," she says. "I especially love to visit the settings for my books. My husband and I often stay in out-of-the-way inns and houses built in times past. It's fun and it gives a wonderful sense of a bygone era." Before becoming a writer, Martin was a real estate broker. She lives with her husband, author Larry Jay Martin, in Missoula, Montana.

HASH(0x885cfb40) out of 5 stars Old Book, New Cover 9 Jun. 2013
By T. Taylor - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
First off, I am a big Kat Martin Fan. I own almost every book she has written.

That being said, I am pointing out to long time fans that this is a REISSUE book. It was originally printed in 1994. It was a good book when I first read it - but I'm wondering why Zebra Books/Kensington Publishing felt it necessary to claim it was a new book.

The story revolves around Devon James, a writer, a mysterious owner Jonathan Stafford and the Inn he owns. A mystery ghost and a terrible crime have been committed at the Inn in the past. The story is tense and well presented.

If you haven't read this before, and I suspect that it is out of print which would support the re-issue, you will find a very good story.

HASH(0x87386b94) out of 5 stars Silent Rose 8 Jun. 2013

Format: Mass Market Paperback
Why is this book being advertised as a new release? I have had a copy of this book for several years. The book is good but should be advertised as a re-release of a previously published novel. Thank you.

HASH(0x8738639c) out of 5 stars Part Romance, Part Paranormal and Part Mystery..... 17 July 2013
By terrylynn - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Kat Martin is one of my favorite authors, I love her Against the.... series, and although this is a re-release, I'm glad to have the opportunity to add it to my collection and it's definitely worth reading almost 20 years later. The only complaint I have about this book is that it's too long at a little over 500 pages. There were a lot of superfluous characters that didn't really add anything to the story and seemed almost like filler. This book could have been just as good minus about 100 pages. But that is just my opinion and not meant to discourage anyone from reading the book.

There is a lot going on in this story. First you have the beautiful Devon James, a successful author who has the bad luck to stay in a Bed and Breakfast that harbors a malevolent spirit from the past that gives her the scare of her life. She feels the intense anger and pain and knows it has something to do with a child from long ago, but that's about it. Already in a somewhat fragile state of mind after a painful divorce and a new fiance who is demanding she set a date for a wedding she's not sure she even wants, Devon feels compelled to discover the mystery of what happened to her in that house and what happened to the child all those years ago. She's just not sure if pursuing this will help alleviate her anxiety or push her over the edge.

Jonathan Stafford is your typical tall, dark and extremely handsome business man and the head of his family's financial empire that has spanned over 150 years and he just happens to own the house where Devon had her frightening confrontation with whatever was in that room. When he finds out that she is determined to investigate and write a book about what she experienced in his house, he is adamant that she stop. For one thing, he doesn't believe in ghosts, and he is absolutely determined to protect his family name and especially his young son who has had enough sorrow and conflict in his life already. He makes it quite clear to Devon that he will stop her by any means necessary, but she just can't find any peace until her questions are answered. As time goes on, Jonathan and Devon spend more time together and their attraction to one another is fierce, both physically and emotionally and a lot of the book surrounds the ups and downs between the two of them as the they struggle with their expectations and desires which are often at odds.

Jonathan and Devon are two very appealing characters. They both have a strong sense of honor and want to do what is right. A few of the secondary characters really enrich the story like Jonathan's son Alex and his Aunt Estell. There is enough action to keep things moving along and by the end you're as curious as they are about confronting the dark presence in that room and what it will mean for everyone when they do. It's a good read, even if it is slightly dated.

HASH(0x874a8264) out of 5 stars predictable 7 Aug. 2013
By avid reader - Published on Amazon.com

even though this is a reprint, i never read this one, and based on readers reviews, expected MUCH more - this was a bleh story- so predictable after page 2 i know already the entire plot, where it was going and how it would end. Was not at all an exciting read, and i still can't see how this became a story with "ghosts" - it just didn't come together - i cannot believe it got so many good reviews - REVIEWERS! GET YOUR STANDARDS UP.
It seems so many books lately getting good review that do not deserve more than a 3 rating. This one did not do it for me - and lately i find no interest in her books. Like Nora Roberts - too many, too little. No more from these authors -

There is no such thing as a bad Kat Martin book.
Kat Martin, takes you through a story, and really puts
her heart into your enjoyment. Kat, is not just
one of those housewife authors who put books
together just for a profit.
Read just one, and you will be pleasently pleased
and surprised.
Pretty soon you will be like me,n waiting for the
next one to come out.
