I really enjoyed reading this book and going through the tough decisions the president and other people in charge had to make to ensure the spread of the disease was contained. However, I agree with the other reviewer that there are too many characters and it's sometimes difficult to follow what is going on. For example, it's only after I finished the book and read the author's blog about it that I understood where the disease originated from, the story leaves a doubt in the reader's mind as to whether the Russians are responsible for this new virus or not. I also found the story focussed pretty much only on the scientists and decision-makers, but didn't really tell the story from the point of view of the ordinary New-Yorkers who had to live (and die) through it all. Overall, a great book though, I would strongly recommend it.

Silent Lips introduces a classic nightmare scenario that we all know is a modern reality (think SARS, swine flu, etc) - the outbreak of a mysterious and seemingly unstoppable disease and how government and society responds. With short snappy chapters and a constantly evolving plot, this really is a speedy read of a thriller.

The only reason this book doesn't get the full 5 stars, is that it felt at times like there were too many characters to keep up with. The premise is strong enough that it could easily keep the reader engaged with a tighter cast and lighter touch with details.

Silent Lips is just the thing for the holiday reading list. It's a real puzzle to work out what could possibly happen next, more importantly, is there any way this could end well? You just have to keep reading to find out.

I kept reading this book until the ending came but it wasn't a book that I would recommend or ever read again. The whole ending of the book left me saying "I read the whole thing for that?"

HASH(0x92057144) out of 5 stars Silent Lips is a rush! 23 Feb. 2012

Reading Silent Lips by Glenn Ashton is like getting on a train heading up a long mountain. The suspense builds and builds until you reach the top and then swoops down into a very surprising ending. The level of detail involved in describing the battle against a plague-like virus attacking New York City is amazing and it feels like you are there in the laboratories and treatment rooms as well as in the highest offices in the land.
Beware that this book can keep you up well past your bedtime. The complexity almost demands a consistent dedication to finishing the book. Then you want to start over to make sure you understand the underlying science, but it's not really a necessity that you do, as it is just a very fine read.
It is definitely an amazing first book and I look forward to other books by this author.

This was a very fast and great read. It was very intense and I found myself sneaking to read when I shouldn't have. The characters were very easy to like and follow. would recommend.
