"A very useful book." -- 'British Deaf News'
"Great books to help further understanding of the language of deaf people." -- 'The Teacher'
" .....for those planning classes, this book is a gift as the lessons plan themselves...." -- Journal of the British Association of Teachers of the Deaf, June 1997
"...........This Introduction should be required reading for all beginners, especially parents, to give them an insight into what educating a deaf child really means. It is not off-putting because it is a concise summary while still covering the necessary points; i.e. deaf people don't prefer British Sign Language to English, it is essential to them as part of their learning process and for their healthy growth and development........" -- Margaret Crawford Teacher of the Deaf, Garvel Deaf Centre, for the British Deaf News, July 1997
From the Author
This book was written during the mid 90s and published in 1996 when little was available for those new to British Sign Language (BSL).
I have been delighted that it has stood the test of time, still being reprinted after 10 years.
It was written to help families and those in contact with deaf children and adults - to reinforce what was learned in sign language classes but not to replace them. As with all of my publications, this book is designed to introduce the basics of BSL as clearly and succinctly as possible in ways that do not compromise the language - and to support face to face learning from Deaf tutors.
As the reviews from the professional bodies quoted here attest, the book is a "gift" to those planning classes and "the Introduction should be required reading for all beginners, especially parents, to give them an insight into what educating a deaf child really means."
Thank you to all those who have sent their positive responses over the years.See all Product description
