The first hyper-telephoto zoom lens from our Contemporary line for better usability.
On the one hand, the product concept of the SIGMA 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Sports is to achieve the best optical and action-capture performance to meet the requirements of professional photographers. On the other hand, that of the SIGMA 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Contemporary is to achieve a lightweight and compact construction for higher usability with similar specifications. It has put a special emphasis on its optical performance by incorporation of 1 FLD and 3 SLD glass elements, optimisation of lens power distribution and minimised chromatic aberration. The dust- and splash-proof construction facilitate photography in the field and the detachable tripod socket offers more convenience for handheld photography.
By incorporating excellent optical glass elements, it minimises chromatic aberration and achieves class leading image quality.
This lens incorporates 1 FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass element, which has performance equal to fluorite, and 3 SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements which improve overall sharpness and compensate for chromatic aberration. Chromatic aberration in particular, which could be visible especially towards the telephoto-end even when stopped down, is corrected by the optimised design of glass elements including the FLD lens. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions.
Lightweight and compact construction for higher usability
Compared to the SIGMA 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Sports, it is more compact and lightweight, enabling easy handling and making it possible to do handheld photography for a longer period of time. The tripod socket is detachable so that the lens can be carried by itself. Without the tripod socket, it also fits well into limited space for storage. Moreover, the tripod socket is made of magnesium which is light and strong at the same time. The tripod socket may be detached and replaced with a rubber protective cover PT-11 to further reduce weight and make handheld photography an even more lightweight and convenient experience. This lens is the optimal choice for photographers who desire hyper-telephoto functionality while staying light on their feet.
Intelligent OS featuring updated algorithm
The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function features an acceleration sensor to ensure even higher precision. Two OS modes are available: Mode 1 for general photography and Mode 2 for motor sports and other applications requiring panning. In Mode 2, the acceleration sensor teams up with the Intelligent OS and its updated stabilisation algorithm to deliver effective stabilisation while you move the camera horizontally, vertically, or diagonally-regardless of the position of the lens. This feature helps ensure effective panning and outstanding capture of moving subjects.
Zoom lock switch can be set at any focal length
The new zoom lock switch enables the zoom ring to be locked at any marked focal length. It can be fixed at the photographer's desirable focal length, which allows stable shooting whether the lens is positioned upward or downward. It also helps during long exposure photography.
Water and oil-repellent coating ensures a pleasant photography experience
The forefront lenses incorporate a water and oil-repellent coating that allows water to be wiped away easily and prevents oil and fat from sticking to the surface, even in challenging shooting conditions. At the same time, the maintenance of the lens surface becomes easier.
Dust-proof and splash-proof mount
As with the SIGMA 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM from the Sports line, the lens mount incorporates a rubber sealing to protect the mount part from dust and water drops.
Quieter and Faster "Optimized AF"
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures high speed and quiet AF. With the further enhanced AF algorithm compared to previous models, continuous AF (AF-C) improves the focusing efficiency by approximately 5%.
Manual override incorporated to make two full-time manual modes switchable.
In addition to AF/MF, MO (Manual Override) is incorporated as one of the options of the focus mode switch. By setting it to the MO position, it switches to manual focus by rotating the focus ring even during continuous AF. With AF position, standard full-time manual focus is available. Using the optional SIGMA USB DOCK, it is possible to adjust the MO position's sensitivity to switch to manual focus.
Incorporating Rounded Diaphragm
The 9 blade-rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image.

150-600 Millimeter F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | C
Portability Meets Versatility
The Sigma 150-600 millimeter 5-6.3 DG HSM OS Contemporary was created around the concept of maximum portability meets utmost image quality in a variable aperture hyper-telephoto zoom lens. Light weight and compact, this s zoom can handle any long-reach photographic situation one may encounter. This 150-600 millimeter Contemporary boasts updated Sigma technology such as a quiet and optimized Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) and a new Optical Stabilizer (OS) with an accelerometer for improved panning photography both vertically and horizontally, essential for birding, wildlife and motor photography. The Sigma 150-600 Contemporary also touts a new zoom lock switch that can be locked at any focal length and a new manual override (MO) switch is incorporated for improved focusing control. Working with the Sigma USB dock, this lens allows for maximum customisation such as firmware updates and adjustments to the focus limiter, AF speed and OS view.
USB Dock Compatibility
Sigma has developed special software (SIGMA Optimisation Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus. In addition, the lenses from our Sports line have customisable AF speed, focus limiter, OS function and full-time manual focus function. The 'Custom Mode Switch' is the device for further customisation on the dedicated lenses.

As many have pointed out, with its unspectacular maximum aperture the lens isn't great in low light (a wider maximum aperture would make it much heavier and much more expensive) and ideally it should be paired with a camera body that has really good low light autofocus ability and relatively low noise at high ISO values. If you're not used to using a supertelephoto lens - and it is quite a steep learning curve - you're going to find that smaller targets that are some distance away are hard to achieve good focus on using autofocus, especially if there is something else slightly further or nearer to potentially focus on such as water, branches etc. This isn't a shortcoming of the lens, more a question of technique and the quality of your camera's autofocus system. In particular, if you're photographing relatively distant birds on water that aren't moving around much, you'll get the best shots on a tripod using either manual focus or the manual override setting (where you can use autofocus and then fine-tune) using the camera's magnified on-screen view rather than the viewfinder where it can be difficult to see if you have optimum focus. While this isn't a criticism of the lens, it's worth knowing so that you don't think there's something wrong with it at longer distances when closer shots with autofocus are so sharp. And of course even with perfect focus, as your subject gets further away there is inevitably a law of diminishing returns with regard to detail and any subsequent cropping or sharpening will bring out any noise in the image.
From an aesthetic point of view, the background blur (bokeh) of areas of the frame that are out of focus is not very attractive when the background is near to the subject - e.g. if you're shooting a duck floating on water, the duck may look fine but the water behind and in front of it less so. On the other hand, if the background is some metres behind the subject then the blur looks fine to me. The sharpness when you get a good focus on something is really spectacular - a small bird 5 or 10 metres away will show every filament of its feathers. The focus limiting switch, with three positions of full range, closest focus to 10 metres and 10 metres to infinity is really useful, - if you're trying to shoot a bird through gaps in branches or reeds or alternatively one perched on a branch quite nearby you can avoid the autofocus locking onto the foreground or background respectively and waste a lot less time hunting for focus.
Obviously this lens is far from cheap in absolute terms, but compared to anything better it's a huge bargain and I would strongly recommend it for shooting birds in your garden or a park, at least as practice for using it in more challenging environments. As an example of what you can achieve when the subject is quite near, the shot of the robin is from about 6 or 7 metres away.
First reactions - WOW that is a big lens.... I have it on my Canon 700D, & it works brilliantly. It's solid, & very heavy, so for best results I use it on either a mono pod or a tripod. I have read that some people find it heavy on batteries, I don't find this in my usage. I used it for a weekend at the Silverston F1 race, I had the image stabiliser & auto focus working all weekend taking over 2000 photos & only did 2 battery changes. Image quality is brilliant, & for the price well worth every penny I paid.
I can find only one design fault. Its the lens hood. It's a very big hood, & costs about £45 to replace. It fits with a twist lock, & is very poor. I have nearly lost it 2 or 3 time now. My solution was to fix it in place before going out & I add 3-4 strips of insulation tape to keep it in place.
Prompt service from seller and a great lens.
Amazon description states 105mm filter size, but this is wrong, further down in the specification it states the filter size is 95mm so watch this if getting a protective filter. (just to confirm - I have now fitted the lens with a 95mm filter which fits perfectly).
Overall, great value for money for the enthusiastic amateur, as well as the lens hood mine came with a padded case with a shoulder strap.
At several thousand pounds less than the equivalent lens from the likes of Canon this is a budget purchase that really delivers.
I Am only a novice but i am loving the results
Just got to get used to the weight roll on summer and the air show season
